Steppenwolf Keyboardist Passes

It’s a sad day in the rock community as we have just learned that legendary keyboardist and founding member of Steppenwolf, Goldy McJohn has passed away at the age of 72. According to a post made on his official Facebook page he had suffered a fatal heart attack which occurred two days ago in the morning.

Possibly just about worth mentioning the passing of Bruce Forsyth, a popular entertainer over here who did have a few pop records and released a few albums over the years, though it was one of the few sides of the business he did not pursue too heavily. Here is his opening at Glastonbury 2013:

He was 85 then

He did a few minor films, but never matched his dreams of comparing to Astaire or Kelly. He did shows on Broadway, but mostly he worked in television as an entertainer and game-show host. His final presenting triumph had been Strictly Come Dancing (the UK version of Dancing With The Stars). He had been ill awhile, and died at the age of 89. RIP Sad

Melissa Bell, mother of Alexandra Burke and sometime singer with Soul II Soul, passed away the other day at the early age of 53 Sad
Bell was best known for her stint in the Grammy award-winning band, which she joined in 1993. Among her recordings with the band were the singles ‘Wish’ (1993) and 1995’s ‘Be A Man’, but Bell left Soul II Soul in 1995 to pursue a solo career. Bell later had a spell as the lead singer of the band Soul Explosion.
Bell had struggled with health problems for a number of years, and suffered from kidney failure in 2008 while Burke was competing in The X Factor.
Also, Walter Becker, co-founder of Steely Dan, has died at the age of 67.

Fine American rocker Tom Petty has died suddenly at the age of 66 (almost 67). From a long career leading the Heartbreakers, and spending time in the Travelling Wilburys, working with greats like Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash, and having hits like "I Won't Back Down" and "Freefallin'"

Gord Downie, popular frontman with Canadian rockers The Tragically Hip, has died at the age of 53
The gifted lyricist - who was dubbed the country's unofficial poet laureate - had been diagnosed with an incurable glioblastoma in May 2016.

Despite his diagnosis, Downie continued to tour with Tragically Hip and produce music in the last years of his life. He recorded a solo double-album called Introduce Yerself in January 2017, which will be released on 27 October.
Something to look forward to there. RIP Sad

Legendary pianist Fats Domino has died at the age of 89
Fats Domino lived in style in New Orleans and in later years didn't like to travel far from his native city.
However, in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina hit, his house was ruined and most of his possessions, including his gold and platinum discs, were destroyed by the floods.
In 2007 he played a benefit concert in aid of the city he was so closely identified with and which remained his home.
A long life which will always be remembered. He was also the reason Chubby Checker took his name.

Former lead singer with Faith No More, Chuck Mosley, has died at the age of 57.
He was Faith No More’s lead singer between 1984 and 1988, recording on their first two albums We Care A Lot and Introduce Yourself. The title track from We Care A Lot became one of the bands best-known tracks and was described as a “brilliantly sarcastic funk-rock response to Live Aid and We Are the World”, which Mosley co-wrote.
Mosley helped the band establish their “funk metal” sound, which was credited with melding early hip-hop, thrash and hardcore, before he was fired from the band in 1988 and replaced by Mike Patton.

Much-loved 1970s teen idol David Cassidy has died, at the age of 67. He had been ill for a while. As a member of the telly show The Partridge Family, he achieved pop success as well, scoring 2 #1 singles in the UK, of which my favourite remains

Daydreamer

Pat DiNizio, who sold millions of records with his New Jersey band, the Smithereens, has died. He passed away just days after indicating via Facebook that he was looking forward to returning to the road. DiNizio was 62 years old and had been recovering from injuries sustained during a fall that he was rehabilitating.

And Keith Chegwin, a much-loved British presenter, was part of Brown Sauce, who had a #15 hit in 1978 with "I Wanna Be a Winner", and has died from a serious lung condition aged 60.

Motorhead legend "Fast" Eddie Clarke has died at the age of 67. Together with Lemmy and Phil"thy Animal" Taylor, they were seen as the classic line-up of Motorhead.
With Motörhead, Clarke played with loose, rock & roll abandon, as his guitar roared around frontman Lemmy Kilmister's lead bass; his guitar solos were like Chuck Berry at 78 R.P.M. He took that style in a more metallic direction with Fastway, a more commercial hard-rock band he formed with former UFO bassist Pete Way. Where Motörhead's grit achieved more success in the UK, Fastway's slicker image, built on Clarke's rock & roll riffs, resonated with American headbangers in the mid Eighties.
He'd been in hospital with pneumonia. RIP Sad

Maverick frontman for The Fall, Mark E Smith, has sadly died at the age of 60.
Smith formed the Fall in 1976 in Prestwich and was the only constant member of the band. He was known for his tempestuous relationship with his bandmates, and frequently fired them – there have been 66 different members over the years, with a third of them lasting less than a year. Smith famously once said: “If it’s me and yer granny on bongos, it’s The Fall.”

He was a famously prolific musician. Last year the Fall released their 32nd studio album, New Facts Emerge, and had been fitfully touring in recent months when Smith’s health would allow. The band played London’s 100 Club in July, while Smith performed from a wheelchair in Wakefield in October.
It's hard to encapsulate quite why Smith was beloved as a one-off character, but he was. RIP Sad

Icelandic composer Johann Johannson has died at the age of 48. RIP Sad
He’d been on the disreputable side of Iceland’s music scene, and his first released music was the buzzing, rackety Jesus and Mary Chain and Joy Division-indebted sound of his band Daisy Hill Puppy Farm in 1988, with the sleaze-rock band HAM operating concurrently into the mid-90s and becoming somewhat legendary in the country.
He would continue playing keyboards and offering studio skills to Icelandic bands through the 90s. His synthpop band Lhooq had a brief flash of success in 1998, after which he found himself producing an excellent album for Marc Almond. A lot of this music is a lot of fun, but in all of it, you can hear swathes of darkness.

50s crooner Vic Damone has died at the age of 89
Mr. Damone, a decade younger than Sinatra, never quite became the pop music institution that the others did. Critics said he did not possess Sinatra’s vivid personality or Bennett’s range and sheer energy, although his smooth, unruffled delivery was similar to Como’s.
I will always recall his name with his version of "On The Street Where You Live".
