Re: Roll Over Beethoven
BBC Proms '15: Beethoven's 9th Symphony in D Minor
The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, led by Andres Nelsen, did the honours, in his last go at working with them after a relationship of many years. The 4th movement, with the "Ode to Joy" bit, remains most entertaining.
BBC Proms '15: Beethoven's 3rd Piano Concerto & Choral Fantasy
This time it was the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, with Leif Ove Andsnes doing the piano solos. As well as these 2 pieces, they also did Stravinsky's "Dumbarton Oaks" and Schoenberg's "Peace on Earth". So that was good.

Re: Roll Over Beethoven
Inevitably with the summer Proms series, there's going to be a few shows with his works on them:
BBC Proms '15: Pastoral Symphonies
The Aurora Orchestra, conducted by Sir Nicholas Collon, delivered on Brett Dean's Pastoral Symphony, Anna Meredith's quite short Smatterhowl (?) and finally LvB's 6th Symphony, the Pastoral one. Great stuff, as usual.

Friday Night at the Proms: Barenboim & the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra
Legendary conductor Daniel Barenboim and his band put on a show over 2 hours, running through stuff by Schoenberg, Beethoven (the Triple Concerto) and Tchaikowsky, with bonuses from Sibelius, Colinka and Mores. Barenboim told the crowd that it was the day before the 65th anniversary of his 1st concert, he being 72. He remains as good as his orchestra.

Concerto - A Beethoven Journey
Pianist & conductor Leif Ove Andsnes spent 4 years playing nothing but Beethoven, with the centre of this project being LvB's 5 Piano Concertos. Around this journey was woven the story of Ludwig, and LOA's own career too. It was OK.

Herbert Blomstedt conducts Orchestre de Paris
At La Salle Pleyel, in Jan 2013, they mainly did Beethoven's 1st Piano Concerto, with brief encores of pieces by Brahms and Chopin. Lars Vogt was the pianist shouldering the burden.
The Secret of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony
British journalist Ian Hislop tries to discern if, after 200 years, there's still more to be said about one of the most famous pieces of classical music ever composed. Conductor Sir John Eliot Gardener gamely used his orchestra to perform the piece and talk about his theories that it was heavily indebted to the recent French Revolution, its swift tempo and dramatic opening exemplifying the upheavals of the time. Though its Viennese premiere didn't go well, the reaction in Paris was far more appropriate, and the rest was history.

Playing Beethoven's Fifth
Sir John Eliot Gardener again, with his Orchestre Revoluionnaire et Romantique, here using period instruments instead of modern ones, playing Symphony #5 in C Minor. Da da da daaaa! indeed.

A Late Quartet
Christopher Walken and Philip Seymour Hoffman are members of a string quartet about to reach their 25th year together. BUT! Walken has been diagnosed with the early stages of Parkinson's disease, and this cues other members to express long-buried resentments. Happily, they resolve these in the dramatic end scene where they perform a famous piece by Beethoven without notes. Despite the schmaltzy backdrop of a wintry New York, the leads easily make good use of the plot.

Ludwig van Beethoven - Violin Concerto in D Major, op.61
Riccardo Chailly conducted the Gewandhausorchester at Leipzig, at the Gewwandhaus itself, with Nikolai Znaider doing the honours on the violin. A pleasant production.

Play On!
The marrer to the edition I saw a month or two back, again with 5 people championing a piece of classical music. Amongst the contributors were Katie Melia, Myleene Klass and Dionne Bromfield, and amongst the tunes were 'Rhapsody in Blue', by Gershwin, Vivaldi's Four Seasons, and Beethoven's 5th Symphony. Whether the show succeeds in persuading kids, I don't know, but I'd like to hope so.
Nobuyuki Tsujii - Live at Carnegie Hall
Blind prodigy makes concert debut on Nov 10, 2011. He played various pieces on piano, by the like of Beethoven, Liszt, Mussorgsky, Chopin, and ended with one of his own compositions. Fine enough work.

Aled Jones - Fy Nhaith Glasurol
Aled's quest led him to Rudesheim, which was a holiday spot for Brahms, part of the Rheingas wine region, home to Lorelei Rock, and a World Heritage site. But then he went on to Bonn, birthplace of Beethoven. Unlike Salzburg and its Mozart fix, Bonn is relatively understated. Both Ludwig's father and grand-father were musical. Ludwig later moved to Vienna, where he was tutored by Haydn, and tipped to supplant Mozart. Aled then moved on to Cologne, which inspired Schumann and Beethoven, and has its own Philharmonic Hall. Finally, he went to Amsterdam, and after considering museums to Van Gogh and Rembrandt, went to the Concert-Gebouw, which was visited by Liszt and remains a top concert gig.

First Night of the Proms 2017
Edward Gardner conducted the BBC Symphony Orchestra in the usual venue of London's Royal Albert Hall, as they did a premiere of a piece by Coult, Beethoven's 3rd Piano Concerto (pianist Igor Levit followed that with an encore from Beethoven's Ode to Joy, a mildly controversial anti-Brexit statement of sorts), and then in the 2nd half, they did a lengthy chorale piece by Adams.

BBC Proms '17: Zhang's Beethoven
Xian Zhang conducted the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in a double bill with the UK premiere of MacMillan's European Requiem, followed by Beethoven's 9th Symphony. Brexit seems to be cropping up a few times in this season...
BBC Proms '17: Beethoven's Fidelio
Juanjo Mena conducted the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra through this opera. Yup.

With the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Sir Simon runs through the 1st and 3rd Symphonies, from 2015, in what I suspect will be a series. Solid stuff, though the 1st is much shorter than you probably expect.

BBC Proms '17: Beethoven's Eroica Revisited
I can't be sure whether this was a straight repeat or simply a performance repeated for a new audience. Nicholas Collon conducted the Aurora Orchestra through the 3rd Symphony, after a protracted opening 20 minutes in which presenter Tom Service dissected the piece to explain just why it's so good. Annoyingly, the closing voiceover said this Prom also featured a piece by Strauss which was available digitally, which seems like a right swizz to me.

Continuing his series, he conducted the Berlin Philharmonic through the Leonore Overture, and then the 2nd and 5th Symphonies. The latter seemed fairly short, for some reason.

BBC Proms '17: Grazinyte-Tyla's Beethoven
The lively conductor of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra leads a gig that starts with Ludwig's Leonore Overture, follows with Stravinsky's Violin Concerto (and an encore from Salonen), then presents a premiere from Gerald Barry's quirky piece Canada, and finally the infamous Beethoven 5th Symphony and a further encore from Bach. A lively and enjoyable evening.
Rattle conducts Beethoven
Still on this series with the Berlin Philharmonic, this time tackling the 4th and 7th Symphonies for an appreciative audience.

The end of the series, I suspect, as the Berlin Phil did the 9th Symphony in D Minor, op.25, which was over an hour, and really rivals the 5th & 6th as his most famous works.

BBC Proms 2018: Shostakovich and Rachmaninov
The BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Karina Canellakis, start their performance with a short bit of Ludwig, his Coriolane Overture. Then it's over to Shostakovich for his 1st Cello Concerto, with an encore from Bach, followed by a Proms premiere from Andrew Norman, and finally the Symphonic Dances by Rachmaninov.
Salzburg Festival - Lorenzo Viotti conducts Beethoven and Schumann
From the Great Hall of the Mozarteum, the Camerata Salzburg give us Ludwig's Violin Concerto in D Major, op.61, a short interlude from Komitas' Armenian Folk Song, and finally Schumann's 3rd Symphony in E Flat Major, op.97. Impressive stuff.

Ben Gernon conducted the BBC Philharmonic as they tackled a piece by comparative newcomer Davies, the 5th Piano Concerto by ol' Ludwig, and then the 2nd Symphony by Brahms.

Sons of Vienna - The Untold Story
6-part series looking at classical composers associated with this Austrian city. The 2nd one looked at the life and deafness of Beethoven, and the 5th episode looked at Johannes Brahms, and how his career started under a cloud for he felt (and was felt) to be in the shadow of Beethoven. He went on to befriend Johann Strauss Jr.

Tunes For Tyrants - Music & Power with Suzy Klein
A 3-part series about the struggles between regimes and composers who opposed or worked with them. Quirky to hear from the grand-sons of Strauss and Prokofiev. Beethoven came up in the concluding part, as Hitler claimed that Ludwig was part of a Germanic legendary status, like Wagner. The British responded by using part of his 5th Symphony as indicative of "V for Victory".

Bemused at the total lack of any Proms nods for this guy.
Treasures of the British Library: Nicola Benedetti
The violin whizz paid homage to Elgar, but was more excited by the handwritten manuscript for Ludwig's Violin Concerto, and also his tuning fork (donated by the widow of Ralph Vaughn Williams). Nicola had been working on a new take on the concerto, and obligingly played a bit to prove it, and she donated her version of the cadenza to the collection.

Neujahrskonzert der Wiener Philharmoniker 2020
The usual NYD concert at Vienna, conducted for the 1st time this year by Latvian Andris Nelsons. Amidst the usual plethora of Strauss family members, the interval was based around Beethoven's "Lost Music", this year marking his 250th anniversary year, so more to come I expect). They also did one of other works in the 2nd half too.

A specially commissioned work based on the 9 Symphonies, by Ian Farrington, here played by members of an orchestra in lockdown, and with visuals from two dancers.
This thread's going to pick up fast imminently.
