OK, a bit of a left-field idea but he's just too popular for me to ignore any longer  Razz
A crucial figure in the transition between the Classical and Romantic eras in Western art music, he remains one of the most famous and influential of all composers. His best-known compositions include 9 symphonies, 5 concertos for piano, 32 piano sonatas, and 16 string quartets.
His music has uplifted people for over 2 centuries, and has produced some of the most famous tunes ever:

Moonlight Sonata (1st Movement)

5th Symphony (conducted by Barenboim)

Ode to Joy (from the 9th Symphony)

and of course a US chart-topper from 1978:

A Fifth of Beethoven - Walter Murphy and the Big Apple Band

Yeah, I like to think that between us we cover a wider range than if we were totally in tune. And this is an exception in the classical vein for the mass market cross-over potential.

The Ghost - Beethoven Piano Trio in D, Op.70 #1
Something of a supergroup performance, with Daniel Barenboim on piano, Pinchas Zukerman on violin, and Jacqueline du Pre on vello. Filmed in 1970, and only half an hour - can't complain.

Barenboim on Beethoven - Piano Sonata Masterclass
From 2006, legendary conductor Daniel Barenboim takes prodigy Alessio Bax through corrections to his performance, in persistent and incisive detail, before taking a few Q&A at the end. If Bax was able to remember and utilise the ideas he was given, he's as much a genius as Barenboim!

Ludwig van Beethoven - The Complete String Quartets
The Belcea Quarter at the Vienna Konzerthaus tackle the Quartet in E Minor, Op. 50 No 2, from 2012. And very pleasant it sounded too.

Barenboim on Beethoven - Live From Berlin: The 32 Piano Sonatas - Concert 1
Dan the Great does #1, #18 and #29, from 2006. I see that the latter was the one he discussed with Bax in the above prog. It doesn't half go on. Nice show, but it didn't mean anything in itself.

Ludwig van Beethoven - The Complete String Quartets
As before with the Belcea Quartet at the Vienna Konzerthaus. This time they did 'String Quartet in B Flat Major Op.130 w/Great Fugue in B Flat Major Op.133. So there.

Ludwig van Beethoven - The Complete String Quartets
Once again, with the Belcea Quartet at the Vienna Konzerthaus, in 2012. This time they did 'String Quartet in F Minor Op.95 aka 'Quartetto Serioso'. Very nice.

Ludwig van Beethoven - The Complete String Quartets
The Belcea Quarter at the Vienna Konzerthaus this time tackle the String Quartet in B Flat Major, Op. 18 No 6, from 2012.

Debussy, Ravel, Beethoven
Esa-Pekka Salonen conducted the Orchestre de Paris at the Salle Pleyel, on Jun 8, 2011. They performed La Mer (Debussy), Concerto in G Minor (Ravel), Partita #6 BWV 830 (Bach) and Symphony #7, Opus 92 (Beethoven), and pleasant it was too.

Barenboim on Beethoven - Live From Berlin - Concert #6
I seem to have missed several of these shows, which is a shame. This time, he did #15 (D Major Op. 28 "Pastoral"), #3 (C Major Op.2 #3), #24 (F Sharp Major Op.78) and #30 (E Major Op.109).

Verbier Festival 2012
From Jul 27, the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Gabor Takacs-Nagy, ran through works by Mozart (Symphony #25), Saint-Saens (Cello Concerto #1 Opus 33), Tchaikowsky (Andante Cantabile) and Beethoven (Symphony #5 Opus 67, i.e. da-da-da-daaa!) Cellist Gautier Capucon took part in the middle two pieces. Quite a good show, really.

Barenboim on Beethoven - The 32 Piano Sonatas - Concert 7
He did #16 (G Major Op. 31 #1), #14 (C Sharp Minor Op. 27 #2 aka Moonlight Sonata), #6 (F Major Op.10 #2) and #31 (A Flat Major Op.110) in this one. The inclusion of such a familiar tune was a useful boost.

Barenboim on Beethoven - The 32 Piano Sonatas - Concert 8
And here, he did #9 (F Major Op.14 #1), #4 (E Flat Major Op.7), #22 (F Major Op.54) and #32 (C Minor Op.111), which seemed more memorable than some of the others. His brilliance continues to shine bright.

Ludwig van Beethoven - The Complete String Quartets
The Belcea Quarter at the Vienna Konzerthaus this time blast through the 'String Quartet in E Minor Op. 59/2' for what it's worth.

Ludwig van Beethoven - The Complete String Quartets
As usual with the Belcea Quartet at the Vienna Konzerthaus. Been a few weeks, but the same old format, here doing the 'String Quarter in A Major, Op.18/5'.

Vladimir Ashkenazy - Beethoven Sonata #29 Op.106
From 1980. What you'd expect, really.

Ludwig van Beethoven - The Complete String Quartets
As usual with the Belcea Quartet at the Vienna Konzerthaus. Still cracking on, here with 'String Quartet in C Major, Op.59/3', which was fine.

Beethoven 9: The Complete Symphonies
The Vienna Philharmonic, conducted by Christian Thielemann, worked through all 9 symphonies (in separate shows, from 2009 & 2010):
Symphony #1 in C Major, op.21
Symphony #2 in D Major, op.36
Symphony #3 in E Flat Major, aka 'Eroica'
Symphony #4 in B Flat Major
Symphony #5 in C Minor, op.67
Symphony #6 in F Major, op.68, aka 'Pastoral'
Symphony #7 in A Major, op.92
Symphony #8 in F Major, op.93
Symphony #9 in D Minor, op.125, aka 'Choral' and also
Coriolan Overture, op.62
"Egmont" Overture, op.84
An impressive collection of gigs, and quite a challenging bit of viewing, too.

Ludwig van Beethoven - The Complete String Quartets
As usual with the Belcea Quartet at the Vienna Konzerthaus. This time, it was 'String Quartet in F Major, op.135', and they show little signs of stopping.

Kent Nagano's Classical Masterpieces
The series returns (or I pick up the episodes I missed last time) with Beethoven's 3rd Symphony in E Flat Major, op.55 i.e. "Eroica", from 2006. Good stuff.

Europa Konzert 2013
Sir Simon Rattle conducted the Berlin Philharmonic through pieces by Vaughn Williams, Dvorak and Beethoven (the 6th Symphony on this occasion). Mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kozema helped out with the singing in the Dvorak. Rather a lot of applauding went on at the end of each section, a bit OTT.

Music Saved My Life! - James Rhodes : Piano Man
A wacky maverick in the Russell Brand mould, who rhapsodised about Beethoven's 21st Piano Sonata in C Major, aka the Waldstein sonata (after a patron of old Ludwig's). Rhodes struggled with the piano, feeling he wasn't good enough for it, but when he had a child, he realised the child would one day question why he had given up on it yet still clearly loved it. And to give the guy credit, he clearly was pretty accomplished.

Europakonzert 2012
From the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, 3 long numbers conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, and performed by the Berlin Philarmonic Orchestra, joined by star cellist Gautier Capucon in the middle one. The final one was the "Da-da-da-dum!" one by Beethoven whose proper name eludes me. I'm not entirely sure why I taped this one.

Missa Solemnis
The Chamber Orchestra of Europe (!), conducted by John Nelson with the Gulbenkian Choir, recorded this Beethoven composition in Lisbon, on Feb 16 & 18, 2010. It was OK, I guess.

Making Van Beethoven
Behind the scenes with the Vienna Philharmonics project to perform all the Symphonies (see Jun 30), with Christian Thielemann talking about logistics, and various orchestra members saluting both Beethoven and Thielemann. Also plenty of talk about Ludwig's own life story, and how his deafness affected his work. A nice companion piece to that concert series.

Omnibus: Leonard Bernstein on Beethoven's 5th Symphony (in C Minor)
Da-da-da-daaaaaaa etc Alistair Cooke intro'd this series, but mainly it was Lenny trying to put a new slant on the piece by looking at the earlier versions and parts which Ludwig had edited out, and why. With a studio floor set based on the actual score, this had enough value, and finished with Bernstein conducting the early part of the piece to prove his point.

Israel Philharmonic Orchestra
At the Mann Auditorium, Tel Aviv, conductor Itzhak Perlman, on crutches, led an intinerary of Beetohven's 'Overture to Egmont, op.84' & 'Concerto In C Major, op.56' aka the Triple Concerto, Schubert's 'Moment Musical #3 in F Minor', and then the main event of Beethoven's 6th Symphony ("Pastoral") in F Major, op.68. Pleasantly impressive stuff.

BBC Proms 2014: Beethoven's Eroica Symphony
The Manchester Halle Orchestra, conducted by Sir Mark Elder, ran through a billing of Berlioz' Corsair Overture, Elgar's Sea Pictures (featuring guest mezzo-soprano Alice Coote) and finally Beethoven's 3rd Symphony. A maritime themed night.

BBC Proms 2014: 50 years of the Monteverdi Choir
Founder & conductor Sir John Eliot Gardiner was on hand to talk about the history being celebrated, and for the main performance, which was of Beethoven's piece, 'Missa Solemnis'. Pleasant enough, presumably a good choice for the occasion.

Barenboim on Beethoven - The 32 Piano Sonatas - Concert 2
Finally caught up with the remaining half of this series! So here we had #2 (A Major op.2 #2), #17 (D Minor op.31, #2 aka "Tempest"), #10 (G Major op.14 #2) and closing on #26 (E Flat Major op.8 aka "Les Adieux"). Pleasant as ever, and the crowd went wild.

And for those preferring a more modern take, here's something else:

A+ - Enjoy Yourself

(okay, more a nod to Walter Murphy than yer man Ludwig, but it still counts Smile )

Barenboim on Beethoven - The 32 Piano Sonatas - Concert 3
Yes, still. This time he did #8 (C Minor, op. 13, aka "Pathetique"), #12 (A Flat Major, op. 26), #25 (G Major, op.79) and #28 (A Major, op.101). I was impressed that #8 bore strong resemblance to a song I know by the great Demis Roussos. See what you think:

Barenboim on Beethoven - The 32 Piano Sonatas - Concert 5
The last of these (for me) featured #7 (D Major op.10 #3), #13 (E Flat Major op.27 #1), #27 (E Minor op.90) and #21 (C Major op.53, dubbed "Waldstein"). And like the others, it was very well done.

I suppose the difficulty with putting together a series of shows like this is trying to group pieces together so that you get works that don't jar too much together, and yet fill out the approximate running time without too much overlap either way.
