How To Read The Charts
I type these charts is a manner to make it extremely easy for you to understand. With any given chart, the guidelines will be the same. The charts are simple. Here is an example taken from a Top 10......
LAST WEEK / THIS WEEK / TITLE / ARTIST(S) This is the format that I find easiest to use.
13 10 --- We Don't Talk Anymore - Cliff Richard
9 9 --- Ladies Night - Kool & The Gang
22 8 --- Coward Of The County - Kenny Rogers
5 7 --- Still - The Commodores *
3 6 --- Babe - Styx **
6 5 --- Do That To Me One More Time - The Captain & Tennille
4 4 --- Send One Your Love - Stevie Wonder
11 3 --- Rock With You - Michael Jackson
1 2 --- Escape (The Pina Colada Song) - Rupert Holmes **
2 1 --- Please Don't Go - K.C. & The Sunshine Band *
Now that the basics are covered, here are few more things to make adventuring the charts a simpler task.....
You will see (*'s) at the end of some of the songs. These represent that the song itself peaked at #1. Depending on how many *'s the song has will tell you how many weeks it maintained the top spot.
(NEW) represents the song's first week on the chart. It is a debut .... duh.
(RE) stands for (RE-ENTRY). This is a song that dropped off of the chart only to come back at a later date.
(Dropouts) --- These will start off each individual chart. For every new song that enters on any given week, a song must drop out. On the week that it bares farewell, I will have a set of numbers behind them. Here is an example....
Dropouts....
Head Games - Foreigner ( 14(3) / 9)
This means that Head Games peaked at #14. It spent a total of three weeks at that peak. The number 9 tells you that the song spent nine weeks on the chart. Pretty simple, huh?
Note --- These charts are compiled from the original Billboard Singles Charts. While Billboard does the entire Hot 100, I am breaking it down into a Top 40 (as Casey Kasem & Shadoe Stevens did). A song that is NEW in the Top 40 doesn't mean that it is new to the Hot 100.
I am starting this forum with my favorite decade of the 80's. This is the decade that got me hooked on charting music. I will update in order until I reach the current date ... yes I mean, today lol. This will be extremely time consuming, yet fun to do. Please know that I will update as often as I can. Once I finally get caught up to date, I plan to delve back into the 50's era and work my up throughout the 70's. Please be patient and bear with me. If I bring a smile to someone's face or bring back a fantastic memory, I've accomplished my goal. Happy Charting!
If you're sharing these charts on any other site, please mention where you found it. It's only fair.

Re: How To Read The Charts
I've made a few slight modifications. Starting in late 1982, I'm using emoticons to spruce the charts up a bit. Instead of using "NEW" to represent a debut, it will look like (early 80's) and then
The Dropouts are also obvious .....
Rather than put an " * " to represent a tune that spent time at #1, It's going to look like this ... \
I hope you enjoy the changes. Cheers.

Re: How To Read The Charts
I suppose I should point out that the astute observer (or indeed, anyone) will notice that the UK charts bear a significant dis-similarity to Adric's US charts, inasmuch as they run from 1-40 in descending order, rather than ascending, and I put 'This Week' to the left' of 'Last Week', instead of vice-versa. I think that's the main changes. Stop me if I'm going too fast for you

Re: How To Read The Charts
In about 2 hours from now I'll be moving from CO to MS. Going to dismantle this dinosaur of a computer in minutes and pack it away. Might take me about a week to settle in and establish an internet connection again. Currently working towards the end of 1962 (Hot 100) and look forward to adding more. Will be back in full form as soon as some sanity has been restored. Cheers~
After this move is done, I'll be looking at options for a complete re-vamp for the charts. I am eager to make the charts easier to read and it might take a new forum all together to accomplish that feat. No worries. This forum is not going anywhere and will continue to update as daily as I can. There are some things that I would like to do that I cannot do via forumotion. There would be A LOT of the copy / paste, but am willing to do it. Really won't know anything until things have settled down. Going to research some things and will update as soon as there's news. As I compile the Hot 100's I am seeing a few things I would have done differently. Honestly, from the start I had no idea if this forum was even going to last or be a fad. I'm incredibly happy with what we've accomplished here and want to better it. Whatever I do, I want it to be accessible in both the states and the UK. Kindest regards~ Adric

Good luck with the move
I do have some plans I want to try out, so I suppose this would be a useful time to do it. Been offline most of the last week.
All I would suggest with the charts would have been to replace the top 40 post with a new top 100 (pasting over the existing one with the new) rather than adding a new post repeating the info. But that's just me.

Apologies, only came back to this post tonight. Agree although it would seem a shame to lose the Top 40's. The Hot 100 is an added bonus for the chart lovers. Suspect some are fine with the 40. I'm approaching 1963 and will certainly take into consideration for a new topic all together that, perhaps, blends in with the given week at hand. Once that is sorted I can always go back and move the previous charts to an easier location. I am looking into a few places that I believe we'll both be very happy with. It'll likely be early on in 2020, though am shopping for something nice. Will update as I can .... Adric~
Edit to add: If you're writing me in a way that I have to translate the language I'm not going to open it. Even more so if you're including links.

This didn't really happen. I looked at a new skin, and then panicked that it might screw things up mightily.misery guts wrote:I do have some plans I want to try out, so I suppose this would be a useful time to do it. Been offline most of the last week.
Not to say I won't look again and think "what the hell..!" in the future.
Don't worry with the top 40 / 100 thing, I just thought it would look fine in the 2019 format without adding new posts all the time. But I appreciate the risk factor.

Re: How To Read The Charts
I've been playing around a bit and have confirmed that I need a computer geek in my life. A few things I have in mind (a) Adding the number of weeks to a given chart. Not sure if that would be helpful or confusing. (b) I'd like to situate the individual years into a decades topic. This would save a lot of scrolling and make it easier. So, there would be a 1980's section (example) that would contain 1980-1989. At the moment, I am afraid of messing up and losing hard work. Treading carefully on that front. It's really just moving charts to their section. (c) It's really time for a new look. Background and such. It's a feature I could play with all night, though can affect how we post. Some skins are very nice though interfere with the way we post charts. Would love for MG to delve into this and try and make it a bit more colorful.
Many other tid-bits I'd love to change without starting from scratch. Taking this slowly and carefully. While I'm good at charting, backspace is also my most used button on the keyboard. Not very computer savvy. To anyone that visits, please understand that I am a perfectionist at heart.

Re: How To Read The Charts
Yeah, I hoped to bracket the years into decades sections, and couldn't hack it. Also concerned at making one false move and blowing it big time (see also why I haven't tried changing the skin).
Not that I don't still hope to get it right eventually...
Don't think the weeks matter, and with the streaming vibe, it would be increasingly meaningless.

Re: How To Read The Charts
Still going to Take a lot of time, but I'm devoting every spare hour I have into charting the Hot 100's in full. Currently I'm tackling 1971 and moving onwards.
Starting (possibly) as soon as next week I'll be removing one emoticon (This always represented a debut). This will be replaced by a simple (--) as a debut. I'm not going to go back and change the previous charts. That would take far more time than I'm willing to invest in. Given the way current charts are being presented I feel it's more important to add the # of weeks by each song. Let me give an example below from the most current chart ....
Weeks On Chart / Last Week / This Week
08 01 01 --- Easy On Me - Adele
21 02 02 --- Stay - The Kid LAROI & Justin Bieber
47 12 03 --- All I Want For Christmas Is You - Mariah Carey
41 14 04 --- Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree - Brenda Lee
38 20 05 --- Jingle Bell Rock - Bobby Helms
From the beginning, I've always loved to keep a Top 40 log even after it stopped being a thing. I'm a very compulsive person and I write the charts down in a notebook before posting here. My notebook collection is almost as big as my Doctor Who collection .... prior to Doctor Karen.
I feel as though this will be a better move for the charts, especially during 'The Christmas Invasion' ummm ... season. If this trend continues Mariah will own the throne at some point.

Re: How To Read The Charts
With the prospect of records returning to the top (Blinding Lights did) every bloody December, I have wondered about changing my notation such. So instead of ********** for 10 total weeks, it could read ******/***/* kind of thing. Whether this will start happening is another matter
