Paul Weller
Woking's finest, has been making records for more than 4 decades, first in The Jam, then in The Style Council, and on his todd from 1991. He's inspired and irritated a generation or more. Here are some of his best moments:
A Town Called Malice - The Jam
Walls Come Tumbling Down! - The Style Council
Sunflower - Paul Weller
From The Floorboards Up - Paul Weller
That Dangerous Age - Paul Weller

Paul Weller at the BBC / BBC Four Sessions: Paul Weller
The former culled clips from across his career, whilst the latter was a more recent staged concert which mostly contained his solo work, though he did please the crowd with a bash at 'The Eton Rifles'. He remains a fine musical force and probably doesn't garner the respect which he probably doesn't care much for anyway.
Heyday TV: Punk Icons - The Jam
Graham McTavish presented this rundown of the 6-year career of the Woking Wonder's first chart foray, how they built slowly in their first few albums, until 'The Eton Rifles' catapulted them right into the heart of the charts. Also notable were the inclusion of two journos I have a lot of time for, spiky-haired John Robb, and Garry "This Is Uncool" Mulholland. Some nice archive clips and comments on less familiar areas too.

Paul Weller @ Glastonbury
One of many on the Pyramid stage on Sunday, he delivered a spirited set for an hour, covering his own solo career (now running into its 25th year) with a few selections from the Jam. But the Style Council might as well not have ever happened. Surely on a balmy summer's evening he could have done "Long Hot Summer" or "You're The Best Thing"? But no. Great stuff otherwise.
The Jam: About The Young Idea
An all-new major documentary which actually gets Paul Weller talking happily and fondly about his first band success, and Rick & Bruce are also included (Rick's recent book was mentioned). Various fans and associates spoke happily of the 5-year arc of the band's fame. A new exhibition was the main peg to hang this on, too.

Rockpalast: The Jam
From the Westfalenhalle, Dortmund, November 30, 1980, a lengthy show with 2 encores, mixing hit singles with lesser remembered material. Despite the band's best efforts, about halfway through the crowd start chanting for "Eton Rifles" whenever there's a gap between songs. Once they play it in the 2nd chorus, it doesn't seem to placate them, either.
Discovering: Paul Weller
A young starter, supported by his Dad, slowly got the Jam together, and showed prolixity. After 6 Jam LPs, he broke up the band and went into the Style Council, to much critical chagrin. Proved popular in America, but after his record company refused to release their 4th LP, he broke that band up too. Starting again as a solo act in 1991, he built up a new catalogue of material and reclaimed his critical fanbase. He continues to write, record, release and tour, and shows no signs of slowing down or stopping.

Video Killed the Radio Star: Paul Weller
Paul himself talked with Tim Pope, who directed most if not all of the Style Council videos, it seems. Paul seemed fond of those days, even if he clearly has no interest in reviving that music. Many silly video ideas were excused simply because the band project was a reaction against the Jam, and if dressing up and pratting about was what was called for, then there it was.
BBC Radio 2 In Concert: Paul Weller
He's got a new album out, and this was an agreeable way of promotion. He did some Style Council numbers for once, and was unafraid to serve up less familiar stuff than some might have expected.
Paul Weller - Live at the Royal Albert Hall - May Love Travel With You
He's really plugging this latest, acoustic album. Here he worked with the London Metropolitan Orchestra, under the guidance of Hannah Peel. Lucy Rose helped out on vocals, which is a good rub for her.

Paul Weller: The Changing Man, by Paolo Hewitt
2007 tome from journo and long-time friend, looking at Paul's story by reflecting on 68 of the man's songs from across his career. Amusingly, Hewitt had recently seen that friendship closed off by Weller, which becomes a running sub-text. It's an impressive work all the same.

Long Hot Summers - The Story of the Style Council
Their early albums were a cheery contrast to the Jam. But then things started to tail off. The reflections on Band Aid & Live Aid were amusingly scathing (Paul respected the motives but felt the song was awful). It's often said that Status Quo were a triumph on first, then followed by Style Council. Paul seemed to feel the band ran its course. Mick Talbot, Dee C Lee and Steve White were also on hand and happy. Boy George and Billy Bragg were contemporaries who were more impressed at times than they might have expected.

Paul Weller - Live at the Barbican
Backed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jules Buckley, and with some guests such as Boy George, Celeste and James Morrison, Paul sang and played a number of songs from across his career, and even the odd Style Council one, up to and including some from his latest album, Fat Pop, which went to #1.

Record On: Wild Wood
This new series looked at his 2nd solo album, but also covered his latter Style Council years and previous solo effort. Band members like Steve Cradock and Steve White were present and talkative, and as well as a new chat from Weller himself, there was ample archive of him from the early 90s, and more. Actor Max Beesley contributed to one track too. Many agreed the pastoral themes of the album, and the haunting timelessness of the title track especially were what set this apart from some of his others.
Radio 2 In Concert: The Style Council
They went to the Royal Albert Hall in 1987 and delivered a solid set of familiar hits and a few others (an encore of English Rose, for example).

Tracks of My Years: Paul Weller
Vernon talked to him as he pushed his new album. He picked tracks by the Kinks, Little Richard, Fairport Convention, Gwen McRae and the Upsetters, though the Supremes might have been more surprising than some.
