David Guetta, Calvin Harris, Pharrell Williams, Mark Ronson... I can't stand them Mad

But they seem to be madly popular these days, certainly in UK charts.

Ahh, very good choices and agree with all of them. Some that come to mind for me would be Bruno Mars (or should we call him Bruno Jackson?), Mariah Carey, anything Huey Lewis did after the 'Sports' album, Bruce Thingsteen, Chris Brown, DJ Khaled, Michael fricken Bolton, Iggy Azalea, Ariana Grande .... but most of all.........  Eminem & Macklemore!  (They should be a couple)  elephant

Well, I was thinking more of the "superstar DJ" trend where an act like Ronson is accorded ultra-high respect for all their projects, and achieves chart success out of all proportion to the artistic value involved (the current Uptown Funk crap is so risible, yet the media lap it up).

But a more generalised chart chat thread might not be a bad idea to discuss brain-waves like Meghan Trainor for instance.

"Uptown Funk" has been #1 in the UK for weeks. It is such a monstrosity of a record that Ronson should bill himself as Frankenstein, having stitched together so many parts from others sources to create his own monster. That he should do this is perhaps neither here nor there, but that he is not only forgiven for doing it, he is lauded as any kind of creative genius boggles the mind. He's pretty much doing the same sort of thing Simon Cowell does, except Cowell is vilified to the skies for it Rolling Eyes

Then we have "The Voice" which has returned for a 4th series in the UK, despite a success track record so far of Nil. Will.i.am is one of the judges, and has pushed and endorsed many artists on his own records in the last 3 years... but nobody from the shows that he was supposed to have mentored Question

At last, a prog on this topic Laughing

Music Moguls
This was a 3 part series looking at the fixers and facilitators.
First, Money Makers, looked at management, from Larry Parnes and "Colonel" Tom Parker, through to Brian Epstein and Andrew Loog Oldham, to Scott Rodger and Jonathan Dickins. Presenter Simon Napier-Bell spoke fondly of the coup of getting Wham! to play in China.
Second, Melody Makers, looked at producers, with presenter Nile Rodgers taking credit for Mark Ronson, which is not something you'd want to do surely? Lamont Dozier and George Martin, Trevor Horn and Giorgio Moroder, Nigel Godrich and Tony Visconti, but of all these the most fascinating was Sylvia Robinson and the story of Sugarhill Delight.
Finally, Myth Makers, which looked at PR. How to get your band noticed, how to get them acquitted of misdemeanours, how to fill newspapers, how to promote new albums, and so on.

A fascinating reiteration of familiar stories and a few new ones. But a sobering insight into the modern music industry.

This World: Predator - The Secret Scandal of J-Pop
Mobeen Azhar went to Japan to investigate the story of Johnny Kitigawa, who died in 2019, but spent many years as a major music mogul. However, plenty of evidence suggested he took a criminal interest in young male talent especially. Past victims talked but some others seemed more forgiving. Mobeen got so irritated at the acceptance that he went to talk to a therapist about why they might seem to not see it as serious as it was. His company, Johnny & Associates, retains its authority in the business, now run by his niece. They didn't make any effort to address his investigations responsibly.

Exposed with Deborah Norville - Lou Pearlman
He was Art Garfunkel's cousin, but other than that, he was a rascal who put together the Backstreet Boys as a get-rich-quick scheme, then when they began to smell a rat, he put together N Sync, and then O Town, by which time a lot of people were getting suspicious and once he was found in Bali, he went to jail, and he died at 62 back in 2016. Lance Bass was an N Sync member willing to talk, and even forgave Lou for his antics, though Jacob and Trevor from O Town had been more circumspect.

Secrets of the Bay City Rollers
DJ turned broadcaster Nicky Campbell revisits the story of the famous 1970s boyband, and more specifically their dubious manager Tam Paton, and his predilections. Stuart "Woody" Wood seems shipper but then he was a teenager when he joined the band just before they made it big. It might have been worth looking into the fact they had been around since the 1960s with little or no success, but the Paton story seems to overshadow whatever musical craft there was.

On The Record
Was Def Jam's Russell Simmons a bad lot? Drew Dixon was the main contributor here, a deeply skilled talent spotter who fell foul of Simmons, and got out. When she went to Arista, she got on famously with Clive Davis, generating hit records for Lauryn Hill, Whitney Houston and Santana. But Davis was replaced by LA Reid, who seemingly arbitrarily nixed her ideas, which was a shame as they would have made Arista more big bucks. Other victims of Simmons spoke out, so eventually Dixon did too. Neither Simmons nor Reid had been charged at the time of this 2020 documentary. I was left in no doubt whose side was telling the truth.

In further developments, there were big changes as a result of this documentary, and more victims coming forward. Though there were management changes, there were then accusations that the new team were little sounder. So this is far from over.

Frank Farian has died at 82. In the 1970s he became the brains behind Boney M, who had 2 huge hits in the UK. He later repeated his success on a lesser height with Milli Vanilli around a decade later. The problem was that he provided secret vocal help too. (Certainly the male vocals in Boney M's hits sound more like a white middle-aged German than a young black American). He was personable in interviews, though. RIP  Sad
