Two major record industry award ceremonies in the space of 3 days: first, the American Grammy Awards on Sunday, and the British Brits on Tuesday:

The Grammys

The Brits

Some surprising winners, some less surprising.

Last week's Grammys were overshadowed by the sudden death of Whitney Houston, but the awards were dominated by Adele, whose banner year in the US was reflected by an armful of gongs.

Can she repeat the success at tonight's Brits?

The usual suspects came through at last weekend's Grammys. Paul McCartney oddly won his 1st Grammy for 40 years affraid Whilst there was more coverage for the dress code than the musical quality.

Brit Awards are next Wednesday, and look like being a mixed bag as well.

Paul McCartney was back again at the 2014 Grammys, this time performing with Ringo Starr as the Beatles were recognised with some sort of lifetime achievement award.

Bigger winners were Daft Punk and Macklemore, though.

Another farcical corporate-friendly night ensued last night: Winners etc

I notice the 'Outstanding Contribution' award has been phased down (only Blur in 2012 have been recipients since 2010), and even the new 'Brits Icon' award didn't seem to get a mention: Overview of past events

Much fuss over Grammy nominations for a few Brit artists (though given the panoply of categories, it's a drop in the ocean, really), especially flavour of the year Sam Smith.

Sam Smith did indeed sweep the board at the Grammys, winning more than folk like Beyoncé.

I notice KanYe West repeated his mirthless stage-invasion antics of yore by protesting at Beck being judged worthy of Best Album. Still, at least it points up the stupidity of claiming that everyone in music is one big jolly family.

Whaddya know, KanYe turned up to the Brits too, but happily nobody cares today. Alas, no-one cares about the winners, but when you look at who did:

Winners, losers, etc

it's maybe not surprising (Royal Blood getting Best British Group is about as surprising as it got).

Brit nominations released yesterday: predictably the revenant Adele joint-scored the most with 4, as did newbies James Bay, and Years & Years.

As acts announced to appear at the show increase, there are also plans for a suitable Bowie tribute, so set Cringe Factor to maximum Rolling Eyes

Kendrick Lamar was the big winner at the Grammys, but was out-newsed by Taylor Swift's award wins and KanYe diss, Adele's performance problems, Ed Sheeran's wins, Lady Gaga's Bowie tribute, and so on...

Supposedly, Duncan Jones was scathing about the Grammys tribute to his dad David Bowie, but the Brits one last night with Annie Lennox & others, went down a lot better.

Unlike last year's Madonna downfall, there was little of note about the show, what with Adele sweeping the board.

Nominations for next year's Grammys have found a typical news-grabbing niche:

Beyonce scores nine Grammy nominations
Beyonce has scooped nine nominations for the 2017 Grammy Awards, extending her lead as the most-nominated woman in Grammys history.
The star is up for the main prize, album of the year, for her ambitious visual album, Lemonade, which tackles themes of race and female identity.
Her single Formation is also up for song and record of the year.

Despite the above, Beyoncé was not that big a winner (not compared to Adele (q.v)).

Bruno Mars, having already zombified Michael Jackson's career, was entrusted with doing a tribute to Prince. Hmm...

Another mad mixture of results at the Brits:

2017 results

Despite all the hype, grime music went begging again, Katy Perry made waves with a political dance routine, and A Tribe Called Quest somehow won Best International Group over Twenty One Pilots and Kings Of Leon, in this day and age. At least Beyoncé did get a sop for last week's snub.

Bruno Mars was a big winner at the Grammys:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-42855097
Bruno Mars and Kendrick Lamar stole the show, and most of the awards, at the 2018 Grammys.
Mars provided the night's big upset, taking the album of the year trophy that most critics assumed would go to Lamar's rap tour de force, Damn.
I read yesterday that Ed Sheeran was suspiciously not nominated for Best Album, despite its enormous success, lest the Grammys should produce another "white act beats black act" result. However, this blatant political correctness backfired:
Alessia Cara won best new artist - making her the only female artist to win a major prize.
Stars like Lady Gaga, Kesha, Lorde and SZA were overlooked, with only 17 awards (out of a total of 86) going to women or female-fronted bands.
The imbalance was particularly incongruous on a night that highlighted the #TimesUp and #MeToo campaigns.
Two wrongs don't make a right, again Rolling Eyes

Last week's Brit Awards were the usual corporate crap:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/43146543

The high spots were the likes of Stormzy and Damon Albarn using acceptance speeches to make political points about the Grenfell tragedy, and Brexit respectively.

The Grammys are coming up this week(end?)

The Brits have announced that Pink will receive the Outstanding Contribution award this year, the first time they've bestowed it on anyone since 2012. Also the first non-UK winner since U2 in 2001.

Madonna's never won that award. But apparently Pink has done enough to merit it...

Kacey Musgraves, Lady Gaga, Childish Gambino and Dua Lipa were all big winners.

Next year's Brit Awards will get a "shake-up":

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-50300002
Organisers promise "more music" as a result, with artists being given full creative control of their performances.
Prizes like best British video and best international group have been cut, while the outstanding contribution award has been retired for 2020.

Why not take it to its logical extreme and cut all the awards so they can spend the whole show with live performances?  Mad  I mean, it's supposed to be an AWARDS show...

The Brits nominations were made last week:

But more trouble with the forthcoming Grammys, after Deborah Dugan was kicked out with 10 days to go, and now she's made some serious claims (followed by counter-claims):

The 2020 62nd Annual Grammy Awards
As hosted by Alicia Keys, this was selected highlights, so performances by Ariana Grande, Lizzo, Billie Eilish and Camila Cabello, not to mention yet another re-teaming of Aerosmith & Run DMC, whose big hit together was before many if not all the above names were even born. Lizzo won at least 1 award, but Billie won many.
