The Brits have made a typical response to criticism. Having subsumed the Best Male/Female awards into 1 category, they this year put forward 5 nominees who were all men. Which is a bit dim. But wait! Next year, to somehow prevent a repeat of this... there will be 10 nominees. Oh well done there...

Also announced are the nominees for the notorious Rising Star award:

The three names are:

The Last Dinner Party
Caity Baser
Sekou

And as I said last year, 2 of these are already having success.

The nominations for the Brits came out this week, and the big news was that someone got 7 nominations, which beats the old record of 6. And who was this super-talent whose air we are not fit to breathe? Why, Raye, of course, she of the "first solo number 1" which came and went rapidly at the start of 2023. Law of averages says she'll win some (though not all) of them.

Wouldn't you know, it was the Grammys last night, no wonder I never know when it is. Lots happened:

Celine Dion made a rare public appearance, to crowd delight.
Killer Mike won several awards, and still felt the long arm of the law afterwards.
Kylie Minogue won a 2nd ever Grammy for the execrable Padam Padam.

Brit Awards 2024 - Red Carpet
A rather worthless hour-long warm-up in which three hosts chatted briefly to many people who would be at the ceremony, either as presenters or nominees, plus some brief montages on various aspects of the show.

Brit Awards 2024
A three-person team presented at the O2 Arena in London, there were many awards and even a few performances from the likes of Dua Lipa, Rema, Tate McRae and closer Kylie Minogue. The latter was awarded the Global Icon award, the current iteration of Outstanding Contribution. The big news story was the ridiculous spectacle of Raye winning SIX awards, beating the previous in-one-night record of 4. One of her awards was for Best New Act, which is a good trick when you've been releasing singles for years. I believe she credited 070 Shake whilst accepting Song of the Year, which is about the first mention of them I've seen in 14 months. To think that of all the truly talented people eligible in the near-50 year history of this award show, the premise that this young lady is more talented than anyone before, is a mad joke.
