Classic Albums: Freak Out!
Terry Gilliam, Cheech Marin and Matt Groening were amongs those singing the praises of the the Mothers of Inventions' hit record, with ample footage from Frank Zappa too, and his son Ahmet among others too.

Dennis Miller Plus One - Nelly
He's got a new album, Heartland, in a country stylee, but also spoke receiving a major lifetime award at the 2021 BET awards, longevity and evolution, his St Louis background, and hopes to be back on tour soon.

Listening Through The Lens - The Christopher Nupen Films
How a maverick BBC employee produced a profile of the young Vladimir Ashkenazy and Daniel Barenboim and won awards, and launched a career of great classical music documentaries. I've watched a lot of Nupen films in the last 11 years, so this was a particular joy, particularly as Ashkenazy and Barenboim were present to join in, as were other performers like Pinchas Zukerman, Itzhak Perlman, Evgeny Kissin, John Williams and Daniil Trifonov, and general broadcasting types like David Attenborough, Michael Grade and Melvyn Bragg. Quite brilliant.

The Old Grey Whistle Test: Dr Hook in Concert
From late November 1975, from the lost days when Dr Hook was a crazy live act, rather than the somewhat softened saccharine version remembered for radio-friendly hits, none of which they did here. In fact, the most famous number they did was a cover of Only Sixteen. Dennis Locorriere led most of the talking.

TRNSMT 2021 - Sam Fender / Courteeners
The first of a series from the Scottish festival, introduced by Edith Bowman. A chance for some lesser lights to get their due perhaps, though only the Mysterines came as a surprise.

Music Legends: Brenda Lee
She married young, and her last hit came in 1985. She was in several Halls of Fame, and had trouble with a vocal cyst.

TRNSMT: Primal Scream / Liam Gallagher
Again, the more interesting offerings were from people I've not come across before, like The Murder Capital, and Lucia and the Best Boys. Even the lesser-seen Declan Welsh and the Decadent West were worth a look.

BBC Radio 6music: The Specials - Live in Session
Steve Lamacq held this together as the veterans helped promote their recent album with a mix of the old and the new. Terry Hall seemed positive garrulous by his standards. Steve felt that Terry's singing voice has rarely sounded so good. Terry was bemused that some of their research had thrown up people that they'd somehow not come across before.

We Want The Light
Another Nupen effort, as the story of Jewish connection to German music was explored through a wealth of contributors from Barenboim to Zukerman to the mighty Alice Sommer. The final third was a concert (conducted by Ashkenazy) of various tunes discussed through the rest of the programme.

Radio 1 - Out! Out! Live (Best Bits)
Highlights from an event put on as part of the slow return of live music venues etc. The usual mix of acts including Sam Fender, Sigrid, Griff, KSI and finally some rock with Biffy Clyro.

TRNSMT: Tom Odell / Snow Patrol
The 3rd of these, again more interesting for the les familiar like Sara N Junbug and even Little Simz.

Fun Boy Three
Another Old Grey Whistle Test prog, from Hitchin, in April 1983. Terry was in typical form, but they did open with Gangsters, and made sure to get through their hits in the timeslot.

Keep On Running - The Story of American Soul
A lengthy and entertaining recount of Wigan Casino, Blackpool Mecca and the short-lived scene which brought energy and passion into the lives of young Northerners in the early 1970s. Ian Levine cropped up amongst the many, many DJs interviewed, but Russ Winstanley and even Tony Blackburn had things to add. Edwin Starr and Marc Almond were among the few musicians to talk too.

Ellen - Final Season - Alessia Cara
She's got a new album out, and performed Best Days. She won a Grammy. She was often supported by this show, and was at Ellen's 60th birthday bash. She lives alone with a dog. She can do impressions and is a mental health advocate. She wrote all the album herself, sometimes in an empty bath-tub.

Music Vault
The first of another new archive series, with Scottish bands on Scottish shows. So that included Big Country and the Communards as much as Twin Atlantic and Biffy Clyro.

Bastille - Rocks Special
They've got a new album coming but wouldn't give away its name yet. It's their 10th anniversary, and ruefully recalled being pipped to #1 in 2013 by Justin Timberlake. They did a part-orchestral gig at Hampton Court. They made vague mentions for the album's structure and themes.

The Old Grey Whistle Test: Janis Ian
A novelty given her hit At Seventeen is about all that's recalled of her these days. She did a solid set in 1976.

Trevor Horn at the BBC
Curious compilation, acts he's worked with, records he's worked on, and of course the bloody Buggles. Grace Jones, tATu and Belle & Sebastian were some of the more odd choices.

Deacon Blue: From Raintown to Your Town
Amusing 1994 effort with the Scottish band pushing their new album, having to make videos, give exclusives to get Radio 1 to care about it, and then travel to Europe to promote it.

British Rock - Ready For The 80s
Strange German-made show from 1979 looking at (and interviewing) members of the Selecter, the Jam, the Boomtown Rats, the Clash, the Police and the Kinks, amongst a wealth of performance footage.

Zappa
Lengthy new career-retrospective, with much footage from Frank talking, as well as family and band members, and even some archive from Alice Cooper, and chat from Steve Vai. He had much wider scope to take in classical music and film scores, not simply churning out rock albums galore.

Lwp - Yn Cyflwyno - CIWB - Careuon Sain O'r Archif
Ciwb (i.e. cube) are a four-piece super-group who here worked on a project for Sain Records, covering 10 tracks from Sain's back catalogue over 5 days, with various guest singers involved.

Ten Pieces - Trailblazers (Nature)
A new series, perhaps. Naomi Wilkinson and Lemn Sissay introduced pieces by Hans Zimmer, Vivaldi and Mason Bates.

Music Vault
The 2nd compilation ranged from Moloko and Des'Ree to Alabama 3 and Toploader, and the ubiquitous Deacon Blue.

Britain's Biggest 70s Hits: Greatest Novelty Records
As well as running down the yearly best sellers, a spin-off show simply offering some of the decade's odder offerings, though some of these were more odd for their inclusion. My Sharona and Rhinestone Cowboy certainly weren't novelties, nor were Cool For Cats or Dreadlock Holiday.

Ten Pieces - Trailblazers - Around the World
Naomi and Lemn return with pieces by Ravi Shankar, Aaron Copland and Grazyna Bacewicz.

Top of the Pops 2 - Halloween Special
This 2007 may well have been on before. The choices ranged from Bauhaus to the Shadows to the Rattles and Voice of the Beehive to Atomic Rooster and even Split Enz.

Music Vault
The 3rd edition had some more unfamiliar names like John Martyn and the Flaming Lips, as well as Will Young doing a Blondie cover.

Ten Years of the SAY Award
That's Scottish Album of the Year. The 2021 winner was Mogwai, and previous winners since 2012 were of similar calibre.

Matt Monro - A Portrait of
Fairly straightforward account, narrated by David Jacobs. Don Black and George Martin at least worked with him and played parts in his career. Tony Christie and Cliff Richard were more admirers of talent. His wife and children were supportive.

Dennis Miller Plus One - Sammy Hagar
Perhaps inevitable. He was in Las Vegas, doing a residency, using planes to get to gigs, of which he does around 40 per year. Sammy had older sisters and a boxing dad. Cream changed his life. Sammy discussed the financial gamble of Cabo Wabo that paid off, having sold his tequila brand and moved onto a rum cocktail instead. He's a long-time friend of his identical twin Guy Fieri.

Viva Variety - I Wanna Be Like You
Repeat of a 2014 series, as three tribute acts discussed and demonstrated the lengths they have to go to. The acts were a Rihanna-like, an Alice Cooper-alike (Gallus Cooper, ho ho) and a Debbie Harry-alike fronting a Blondie act called Dirty Harry. The Rihanna one got to go to South Africa at the behest of the real Rihanna, which perhaps trumped the Debbie one meeting the real D Harry, or A Cooper's prop guy using a real Cooper prop in the act.

Ex-S: Annie Lennox - Diva
A rare interview (that is, Annie did all the talking) around the time of her first solo album, going over her career up to then, life in Aberdeen, becoming a mother, being an only child, ageism in the business, dressing up for a promo shoot in St Marks Square, and so on.

MTV Live: KSI
Actually from a couple of months back when KSI performed in Blackpool on the night that the Illuminations were switched on. He briefly chatted to Becca Dudley, then ran through a short though hit-packed set, to crowd pleasure.

Music Vault
The 4th one included some old stagers like Fairground Attraction and Hue & Cry, as well as more generalised types like Goldfrapp and Idlewild.

Britain's Biggest 70s Hits: Glam Rock
A rather frenzied blend, with plenty of Bowie and T-Rez, bits of Wizzard, and pushing it perhaps with Roxy Music and Steve Harley.

The 80s - Music's Greatest Decade?
Journalist Dylan Jones spent 1 hour discussing his topic, talking to members of Bananarama, Cookie Crew, UB40 and so on to back up his theory - notable as probably one of Astro's last such appearances. He then did a further 3 hours of clips in three categories like "True Originals", "Alternative Voices" and "Hip Hop to House". There were some surprises here, but not many.

Who Do You Think You Are? Pixie Lott
Not one of your great thinkers, Pixie found some military musicians in her background, and got to sing "Mama Do" with a latter-day military band.

Anton Bruckner - The Making of a Giant
Various conductors like Rattle, Gergiev and Nagano spoke warmly of the Austrian composer, as well as various musicologists, organists, and even someone from the Bruckner Society of America.

Eliza Shaddad - Celebration of Live
She's got a new album out called The Woman You Want, and here she and her producer Ben Jackson (no, really) discussed making the album in lockdown, and hiring Battersea Arts Centre to make 3 pop videos for tracks on the album.

Britain's Biggest 70s Hits: Greatest 70s Hit Songwriters
Another somewhat dubious selection, ranging from Paul McCartney and Elton john, and Billy Joel and Kate Bush, to the Who, the Police, Don McClean (!) and Bob Marley.

Video Killed the Radio Star: Pink
Blimey, a new series. Oddly I feel her heyday was the Family Portrait album which is almost 20 years old, though she's probably had more #1s since then.

The Old Grey Whistle Test: Linda Ronstadt
The easy listening favourite got her turn on November 1976, and besides some Buddy Holly, Willie Nelson and Smokey Robinson covers, she did some other less recognisable songs too.

Venice - A Concert for our Climate
The Orchestra of Teatro La Fenice were conducted by Michele Gamba through a somewhat nature-themed show with pieces by Wagner, Mendelssohn, Offenbach, Verdi and finally Smetana. As plausible a reason as any.

MTV Live - From Blackpool Switch-On - The Best Bits
Following on from the KSI show, a selection of performances from the Wombats, Wes Nelson, Ella Henderson and KSI again.

Video Killed The Radio Star: Thin Lizzy
As contributor Neil McCormick noted, they started before videos really took off, and some of their later attempts weren't all that great. But the band's music is fondly remembered, and Phil Lynott's untimely death still mourned.

Kojey Radical's Decipher - with Celeste
A quite short chat show allowing two musicians to talk shop, and for Celeste to sing Ideal Woman, from her album.

Ex-S : Del Amitri - Legends of the Mall
Justin Currie and gang visit the USA in 1995 on the strength of radio hit Roll To Me, but find their promotion trail leads them to some very sorry places, and prompt one band-member to call it quits. On the other hand, Justin slips in the true meaning (perhaps) of their band name.

Rihanna - No Regrets
This 2013 tabloid-esque effort covered her rise to fame, 11 #1's, 25 million albums and 60 million singles, plus 6 Grammys. The idea is she was solely seen as a challenger to Beyonce who eventually made her own path, notwithstanding Chris Brown issues and some dodgy themes.

Video Killed The Radio Star: Kylie Minogue
Mostly from her 1999 comeback onwards, grand stylistic touches, or the occasional small-scale but technically clever efforts.

Music Vault
The penultimate show in this series included the lesser-seen likes of Gun, Frightened Rabbit and Goodbye Mr Mackenzie, as well as the very familiar Texas, Biffy Clyro and Amy McDonald.

Ex-S - Eddi Reader - All Or Nothing
A 1992 profile, as Sadenia talks about her childhood, her tentative progress in pop music (being a backing singer for Eurythmics for example), before Fairground Attraction exploded and then imploded, and she went solo. Her parents both sang.

Witness - Mapuche Teen Rap Queen
MC Millaray lives in Santiago in Chile, and is concerned about the fate of those in the Mapuche region who are oppressed. She raps about it.

TUNE - Sam Gellaitry
He did three numbers in a forest in Cambusbarron, and talked about the positives of solitude in such circumstances.

The Old Grey Whistle Test: The Manhattan Transfer
Very much a curiosity, a band recalled for one UK #1 record and nothing else. They're a 4-part harmony group who were making their very first British television appearance apparently.

TRNSMT
The selections from the summer return, with turns from Blossoms, The Lathums and Courteeners, as well as KSI, Becky Hill and Griff.

The Old Grey Whistle Test - John Martyn
He got slightly less time than most seen recently, on his 1978 appearance, but an irascible and entertaining performer all the same.

Music Vault
The last in this series managed to find time for Hipsway and Lisa Stansfield, besides Beenie Man and Craig David, though happily saving Chris Rea for last. Hope for more in 2022?

Video Killed The Radio Star: Talking Heads
Journalist Neil McCormick and producer Malcolm Gerrie discussed famous TH vids like Road to Nowhere, and also a few of David Byrne's own solo hits, still remarkable for wacky videos even if much less commercially successful.

Robert Schumann - The Symphonies
All 4, over 2 shows, at the Suntory Hall in Tokyo, as Christian Thielemann conducted the Staatskapelle Dresden in 2018.

Music Legends - Paul Anka
His first marriage lasted 37 years, his 2nd and 3rd less so. He's written nearly a thousand songs, and he sang a lot of them, but he's most famous for coming up with the words to My Way.

Dennis Miller Plus One - Ziggy Marley
Born a few years before Bowie came up with Ziggy Stardust, though he did meet him much later. He did an album based on children's material around 9 years ago, and has now got a similar book out, Little John Crow. He put out a family record during lockdown last year. He was in LA. His father Bob died when he was 12, and he started writing a year or two later. He also mentioned the URGE foundation - Unlimited Resources Giving Enlightenment. He expects to tour next summer. He's won 8 Grammys.

BBC Proms ' 15: Benedetti Plays Korngold
A revised repeat, introduced by Tom Service, as the Scottish violin whizz plays a violin concerto with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, before they perform a work by Britten to follow.

Marti Pellow - Behind The Smile
This 2003 feature looked at the rise and fall of Wet Wet Wet, as the band suffered with making music they didn't like, and Marti became fond of drugs. Having cleaned up his act, he was working with Chris Difford at this time, and had appeared in stage musicals like Chicago too.

Britain's Biggest 70s Hits: Greatest 70s Dance Hits
I wonder why they didn't go this far for the 80s and 90s series. Or maybe they did and I missed it. Here their definition of "dance" managed to include not just obvious choices like the O'Jays, the Gap Band and the Sugarhill Gang, but also Queen, ELO, Gerry Rafferty and Dr Hook.

Britain's Biggest 70s Hits: Biggest 70s Heartthrobs
A rather spurious category, as it moved from Blondie & Donna Summer, through the Police and Bruce Springsteen, to Bay City Rollers and Cliff Richard.

Saint Andrew's Day at the BBC
Another compilation, this time of Scottish acts. So whilst most of it were obvious names like Simple Minds and Travis, or Deacon Blue and Big Country, there were the few oddities like Sheena Easton and Emeli Sande.

Y Meseia
A Welsh orchestra performing Handel's most famous work, from 2013.

TRNSMT
The penultimate selection, rather going through the motions by this stage.

Cum On Feel The Noize
Entertaining European look at the story of rock and metal in the last 50-odd years, with contributions from members of Deep Purple, Steel Panther, Disturbed and many more. More interesting were the oddballs like Powerwolf and Life Of Agony, who may be huge in Europe, but haven't crossed over here.

Nicola Benedetti at the BBC
Rather loose collection of performances and a few chat bits, and the odd comment from fans and collaborators.

Face To Face: DJ Neptune
He's from Nigeria, and was inspired to become a DJ from when he was a child. He took his name in honour of the Neptunes. He's got a tour planned for 2022, maybe including the UK too.

Sight & Sound In Concert - Thin Lizzy
The lads were on in 1983, rather past their peak, though Phil was still trying his hardest, plugging new tracks amidst the old reliables.

Biffy Clyro - A Celebration of Endings - Live From Glasgow
An impressive continual hour in various little settings, with help from the Cain String Quartet.

They came on in June 1978 and did a decent set with Anything That's Rock N Roll and American Girl and some new tracks too.

Face to Face: Vector
Affable enough Nigerian act who manages to mention being a fan of Stormzy and open to collaborations per se, and how 2020 has encouraged a general re-evaluation of what's important.

Dennis Miller Plus One - Albert Hammond Jr
The Strokes won a Grammy with their 2020 album. He's been sober for 10 years, and was in the LA studio. He's pushing some form of wine brand which has taken a while to develop. He met fellow Stroke Julian Casablancas at finishing school. He respects his dad's musical achievements. He's 41, and watched MotoGP and F1, which is partly where the wine project started. The Strokes will likely be touring in 2022 with Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Eminem - A Shady Story
This 2014 unauthorised account covers familiar ground and is able to include his return from hiatus. The few contributors ranged from a psychologist to a couple of American reports, though footage of Eminem himself filled in some of the story. That Just Lose It represented his first big failure after much early success is something I could agree with.

Lwp - Curadur - Heledd Watkins
She's a member of HMS Morris, and was here to also push Melin Melyn, Kathod and Bethan Mai, as well as her own band of course. And to dress up as a cat.
