Daft Punk’s Get Lucky passes one million sales in UK
Daft Punk’s Get Lucky passes one million sales in UK
Daft Punk’s Get Lucky shows no signs of slowing down any time soon, after becoming the latest single to pass the one million sales mark in the UK.
The French duo’s track – which spent four weeks at number one earlier this year – took just 69 days to pass the magic figure, further cementing its status as the biggest selling single of 2013 so far.
Get Lucky is also the 136th single to pass the million sales mark in the UK, as well as becoming only the second million seller ever by a French act.
The only other Gallic performer to reach the million mark is David Guetta, whose single Titanium limped past the finish line in its 79th week of release.
As well as being the first ever UK million seller for Daft Punk, it is also the first ever for their main collaborators on the track, including Nile Rodgers.
The producer, whose career making music spans 40 years, told the Official Charts Company he was ‘flabbergasted’ by the news.
“The fact that Get Lucky has sold a million copies in the UK is one thing, but to do it in 69 days?! I’m awestruck,’ he said.
‘When I think how it happened, too, with people who I like a lot, that we just decided to go into the studio and do something… And then it turns out like this? It’s absolutely remarkable, because no-one was prepared for this!’
Martin Talbot of the Official Charts Company added: “This is another impressive achievement by Daft Punk, who have reached this landmark in super-quick time.
‘The last time a single took less than three months to hit a million was James Arthur’s Impossible – which did it in its fifth week on sale – who had the profile and impact of the X Factor behind him.’
Get Lucky- recently reworked into a 10-minute version – is the 10th single to pass the million mark this year but the first actually released in 2013 to do the honours.
A brace of recent releases, including James Arthur’s Impossible, fun’s We Are Young and Psy’s Gangnam Style – have all passed the milestone since January.
In addition several older tracks – including Elton John’s 1976 hit Don’t Go Breaking My Heart, Peter Andre’s Mysterious Girl and Atomic Kitten’s Whole Again – have hit the magic million in the past six months.
The easy availability of older songs via download has been attributed to larger numbers of tracks reaching the million mark.

Re: Nile Rodgers & Chic
Nice to see they at least gave Nile Rodgers some credit for a change, since he seems to be budged out by Pharrell the rest of the time. But then, he's only mentioned in a patronising fashion.

Nile Rodgers & Chic
The dreadlocked genius part-responsible for some of the most iconic music of the last 40 years, also a whizz as a producer (whether with Sister Sledge or Bowie or Madonna etc). Chic are still disgracefully not in the American Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. In the meantime, here are just a few of the reasons why they're still so loved, and were so important:
Le Freak
I Want Your Love
Good Times (live)
Everybody Dance (do-do-do-do)
Dance Dance Dance (Yowsah Yowsah Yowsah)

Nile Rodgers - The Hitmaker
He had a tough upbringing, but made good with the Big Apple Band, who quickly became Chic, and one of the acts at the forefront of Disco. On the one hand, they delivered a sampled classic in 'Good Times', and I loved the story about how 'Le Freak' started out as a riposte to being barred from entry to a NYE party at Studio 54. But on the other, the 'disco sucks' campaign spelled their end. Having helped give a boost to Sister Sledge, Rodgers was asked by David Bowie for help with his 1983 album 'Let's Dance', which triggered another chapter in his success as a producer. Sadly, after a concert with the reformed Chic in 1996, his long-time compadre Bernard Edwards died. Rodgers continues to perform, despite his own health issues, and remains highly respected for his track record.
Chic ft Nile Rodgers: Glastonbury 2013
An hour & half show from the West Holts Stage, they started out with some of Chic's best, then ran through many of the tracks Nile has helped make for other people (eg I'm Coming Out, We Are Family, Like A Virgin, Notorious, Let's Dance), before returning to more from Chic's heyday. Seasick Steve was amongst those who could be seen watching from the wings, and the closing 'Good Times' saw the stage shared with all & sundry. A feel good classic.

Chic w/Nile Rodgers: Live at Montreux
To prove their PR offensive of the past year was nothing new, here was a gig from July 17, 2004, with an unsurprising mix of material, although to be fair they do have plenty of big hitters to get through. They started on 'Everybody Dance' and ended on 'Good Times'.
iTunes Festival: Chic ft Nile Rodgers
Under an hour of the usual hits, but they still sound polished and funky, so why not?

Jazz a Vienne - Chic ft Nile Rodgers 2013
An entertaining concert from Oct '13, with the usual run of Chic hits, Nile's own works with Diana Ross, Sister Sledge and others, then more classic work from Chic, finishing with a version of Good Times that includes Rapper's Delight.
Neil McCormick's Needle Time: Nile Rodgers
This autumn 2013 chat kicked off with making "Get Lucky". Nile met Daft Punk back in 1997. When they finally worked together, they insisted he work in the way Chic would have. He talked of preferring to work as a producer with lesser known talents like Sister Sledge. He met David Bowie whilst out carousing with Billy Idol. Though Madonna didn't excel technically, she had the whole synergistic package. His autobiography is discussed. He also had his infamous Hitmaker guitar with him, playing several excerpts from tracks he had worked on with it. Overall, a lovely bloke.

Chic ft Nile Rodgers at Glastonbury 2017
Unlike their previous appearance in 2013, Nile and the gang were very much in the heritage camp, on the Pyramid stage on Sunday evening, after Barry Gibb. The performance was solid, as you'd expect, and interest came from chat Nile gave about helping the clean-up operation for the survivors of the Grenfell Tower Block Fire. Later, he spoke of how he'd just got the all-clear after being diagnosed with cancer back in 2011. So a cause for much celebration of humanity, and the typical conclusion of crowd invading during Good Times.
Weekend - 2/7/17
Nile was a guest on Aled Jones' early morning show, talking a bit about his involvement with the Grenfell response, background stuff about his parents and early career, how he later moved into production, and having met Alice Cooper again when writing his autobiography, having been inspired by seeing Cooper at Max's Kansas City back in the late 1960s.
Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott were also interviewed about their new album, and Ciaran Hinds is soon acting in a new play that uses the music of Bob Dylan, called Girl From The North Country.

HARDtalk: Nile Rodgers
From 2015, here Nile talked about how his tough home-life forced him to grow up fast, and then how doing Chic with Bernard Edwards was a success because they followed a refined, sophisticated sound. Despite the acclaim, they only had a short peak, due to the "disco sucks" backlash. But he was able to turn to producing and help other acts, despite his own records now being flops. He felt it was crazy that he was a survivor, and that jealousy was a motivating inspiration.

Nile Rodgers - How to Make It in the Music Business
A 3-part series basically re-telling Nile's story, but with the ostensible peg of learning advice on how you too can follow his path (not that the same situations can be repeated now anyway). A hit record should "speak to the souls of a million strangers". Getting snubbed at Studio 54 led to "Le Freak" (an old story, but always worth re-hearing). He puts the hook upfront, and includes deep hidden meanings later. A taboo element gives depth. Failure is inevitable (Rod Stewart prompted the 'disco sucks' backlash). Diana Ross was upset to find what coming out meant. He wrote Carly Simon's Why? for a soundtrack (that was new to me). He's worked with Avicii, Laura Mvula and Keith Urban too.

Nile Rodgers & Chic: Good Times 2017/2018
Following Bryan Adams and Robbie Williams in recent years, it was Nile's turn to see out the year for the BBC and kick off the new. This involved a predictable set, but still an enjoyable experience, and it would be hard to begrudge him for bringing up his battles with cancer again.

He's got a new job working at Abbey Road:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-43507507
Sounds impressive.Nile Rodgers is to take up a new role at Abbey Road Studios - home to some of the most revered albums of all time.
The disco legend will be the studio's chief creative advisor - nurturing new talent, as well as recording with some of rock and pop's biggest artists.
The 65-year-old, who is recording a new Chic album, will also use the studio as his primary creative base in the UK.
Sounds like a big project coming.Over the last few months, Rodgers has brought the likes of Bruno Mars and Disclosure to the studios to work on his new music.
British soul singers Jorja Smith, Ray BLK and Nao have also laid down vocals for Chic's new album, as has US rapper Anderson .Paak.

Later w/Jools Holland - Nile Rodgers & Chic - June 2018
Wouldn't normally bother with mentioning this series, but Nile rocked up on the last show of the series to play some new material and some old classics, which did indeed feature Nao and Mura Masa among others. He told the origins of Le Freak story too, and was encouraged to bandy words with veterans Chas & Dave who were also on the show, and arguably about as far from Chic as you might reasonably try getting.

Footage of this event seems a pale shadow of the Biggest Weekend effort, as chats with Feeder and the Script bookended this performance from the disco legends, which was much as you would expect if you've seen any show of theirs lately. Credit to Nile, he knows what's required, and delivers.

Along with Rita Ora and Jess Glynne, Nile and the gang were trusted to close the show, which they did ably with I Dance My Dance (presumably from the new album) and Le Freak (again, a somewhat unsuitable choice for this charity, I would have said).

Studio 54
Ian Schrager was the main force of this production; Steve Rubell's co-manager of the New York super-club that burned brightly for so much of disco, until the police moved in to uphold the law. Fraud and drugs were some of the issues. That said, the music and the scene were intertwined. Nile here was one of many giving their viewpoint. All sorts of staff members told their story, and all seemed proud to have been a part of it. But it only really worked for a few years. Schrager and Rubell went to jail, and Schrager made a longer-term career designing hotels. Rubell sadly died in 1989.

Well, at least this was just the music. I like the way he has incorporated records he worked on after Chic into his band's repertoire, and Get Lucky didn't hurt him either.

CNBC Conversation: Nile Rodgers
Tania Bryer talked over link partly about the Abbey Road gig mentioned earlier, which I'd forgotten about. He mentioned feeling luckier to have revenue streams (though many other musicians don't feel that lucky). He plans to tour Europe in June. They talked about the "We are Family Foundation". He talked of working on the Like A Virgin album, the surprises of Get Lucky and Let's Dance. Says there is ingrained racism in the USA. He co-founded the Hipgnosis Songs Fund, which has been in the news for buying the rights to back catalogues like Bob Dylan.

Portrait Artist of the Year: Painting Nile Rodgers
This was the finale for the 2019/2020 series, as winner Christabel Blackburn had three sessions in which to bond with Nile, prior to painting his portrait, to hang in the Royal Albert Hall. She attended a podcast whilst he curated Meltdown, then had a session on the roof of Abbey Road, and for her final session was flown to his place in Connecticut. Then there came the unveiling, attended by Nile and his "life partner". He liked the portrait, as did the series presenters and judges.

Unsure how I might have missed this 2017 concert previously, but a steady effort all the same, from Everybody Dance through to the crowd stomping Good Times/Rapper's Delight ending.

Amol Rajan Interviews - Nile Rodgers
The BBC media man went to Abbey Road to talk through the career of the legend, who described himself as a "worker bee". He told anecdotes about the creations of Let's Dance, Le Freak and We Are Family, plus chat about Get Lucky. His tricky childhood, and how things picked up when he moved from New York to Los Angeles. The sad end of Bernard Edwards (though he did get one last show in Budokan). His mother had Alzheimers before she died. Streaming devalues artists. He's been sober for 27 years, and is 69 now.

Belladrum (Day 3)
The closing day was visited by Dreadzone, I See Rivers, Manran, Dadi Freyr, Shed Seven and the crazy antics of Colonel Mustard and the Dijon 5, but chiefly the headliners were of course Nile and the gang, and he took time to chat about how he was inspired during the pandemic, there may be another Chic album, remembered times Scotland had figured in the Chic story, and has worked with Beyonce. Then there was the performance, which was a varied and busy as you'd expect if you've seen many of these shows, but still very good for all that.

Slightly longer coverage than the above, though it felt like less somehow (no interview stuff, perhaps). Much the same sort of show you'd expect; if it ain't broke, why fix it?
