Kylie Minogue's new album went to #1, her 8th, making her the first act to have #1 albums in the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s and 2020s.
In less cheerful news, the annual Christmas deluge is expected to start earlier this year, with Mariah Carey already in at #60

In 30+ years of following the charts, one of the most depressing mornings. Mariah Carey's Christmas hit is finally #1 in the UK after a mere 26 years. It entirely shows up the basic flaw, not with streaming, but with the rules for composition of the charts, as I've been whining for years.

Yes, the news made it to the states late yesterday. Given the obnoxious charting system we have, I suspect this will happen every December from here on out until the system is changed. No doubt she'll return to #1 in the states as well. It's difficult to chart in December because of this. Same chart, different year. It's highly annoying to those of us who have been following the charts for decades. From Jan.-Nov. we get gangsta rap & sexually explicit garbage. Then December comes and it's all holly jolly. I'd call it a sick joke, but it's much more than that.
I've said this before. Once upon a time I followed the charts so I'd know what to listen to. Now I follow them so I know what to avoid.
Re: Hot 100 Chart Moves:
They belong in a separate "seniors" chart. Whether you like Drake or Ariana or Dua Lipa or not, they don't deserve to be belittled for a month every bloody December.

And now Wham! are #1, the first time Last Christmas has ever got to the top, after a measly 36-7 years

Re: Hot 100 Chart Moves:
The post-Christmas effect again saw 2/3 of the UK top 40 drop out, including last week's top 8, allowing #9 to rise to #1 which it would have been anyway without the Christmas intrusion.

Re: Hot 100 Chart Moves:
A sluggish couple of months in the UK comes to a dramatic halt, as Olivia Rodrigo's 9-week run at the top ends with her song dropping to #18. One of 6 songs to fall almost 20 places, including Drake's 3 Top Ten hits from last week.
The bloody awful Tiktok-inspired "sea shanty" remix record is #1 instead. Gawdelpus...
US having an all-new top 4 is pretty shocking too

Lil Nas X has got a 2nd UK #1, surprisingly (after Old Town Road in 2019). I suspect the wretched Wellerman might retake the top next week, though.

LNX knocked off in the UK at last by Tion Wayne and Russ Millions, who are being acclaimed for taking "drill" music to #1 for the first time.

Re: Hot 100 Chart Moves:
Olivia Rodrigo has got her 2nd UK #1 single, in accord with her album also going to #1. She is now the youngest act to have both #1's simultaneously here, which was previously held by Lewis Capaldi.
Elsewhere, 4 of last week's top 10 drop heavily, causing a bit of surprise rising to balance it out.

Inhaler, widely known as "the band led by Bono's son Elijah", have their first UK #1 album, at their first attempt, something U2 never managed.
Mercifully, despite doing better than in 2018, the England team's support saw Three Lions peak at #4, with 3 other football-derived tracks in the top 30 (including Sweet Caroline, FFS!)

Re: Hot 100 Chart Moves:
Christmas is finally over, and Gayle has finally climbed to the UK #1 spot. Big debut for Lauren Spencer-Smith at #4, who I gather is an American Idol winner or something, the first time such a winner has made an impact in this chart in a very long time.
The Weeknd also picked a good time to release an album, as he's #1 there too.

chart stuff
After 59 weeks on the Hot 100 'Heat Waves' by Glass Animals has hit #1. A record breaking # of weeks to hit the top spot. I miss the days when it was unheard of for a song to spend that amount of weeks on the chart. Songs are spending entirely too long. Tiresome, but congrats, none the less.
Re: Hot 100 Chart Moves:
Bizarre story really; it's an okay song, but it's mammoth success both in the US and here in the UK is beyond me.Adric wrote:After 59 weeks on the Hot 100 'Heat Waves' by Glass Animals has hit #1. Dua Lipa’s ‘Levitating’ Makes History as the Longest-Charting Billboard Hot 100 Hit Ever Among Women
Minus the click-bait in article ... (on the chart dated March 19, 2022), rewriting the record for the most weeks ever spent on the survey for a song by a woman. It one-ups the 69-week run of LeAnn Rimes’ “How Do I Live” in 1997-98.

Re: Hot 100 Chart Moves:
Idiotic, but I suspect more for the inclusion of the guests included on several versions. It's far from the best song on that album, never mind the rest of her career.Adric wrote:Dua Lipa’s ‘Levitating’ Makes History as the Longest-Charting Billboard Hot 100 Hit Ever Among Women

And I would expect other acts to surpass it, the way things are going.

Kendrick Lamar’s ‘We Cry Together’ Sees Biggest One Week Drop in the History of the Billboard Hot 100.
On Tuesday, Billboard updated its weekly Hot 100 Chart, which reveals the most listened to songs in the country. One song, in particular, had a very long drop. Last week, “We Cry Together” landed at 16 on the Hot 100. This week, the song moved down 81 spots going to 97, breaking the record for the biggest single-week drop in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

It's been a while since I've had something to get cross about, and this week Kate Bush is acclaimed at scoring her 2nd ever UK #1 single with Running Up That Hill, which originally only reached #3 back in 1985. This is thanks not so much to dreary streamer drama Stranger Things, than the iniquitous OCC rules on entry (in fact, they even said in advance they were amending the rules to RUTH's benefit!). I love the song, don't get me wrong, but it belongs in a separate "seniors" chart, not as superior to the current crop, good or bad.

Drake's "Texts Go Green" ties Kendrick Lamar and Taylour Paige's "We Cry Together" for the biggest single week downward movement in Hot 100 history (81 spots).

Sense has helpfully prevailed after a mere 3 weeks, and LF System are #1 at last, with their track based around a 70s sample from Silk.misery guts wrote:It's been a while since I've had something to get cross about, and this week Kate Bush is acclaimed at scoring her 2nd ever UK #1 single with Running Up That Hill, which originally only reached #3 back in 1985. LF System still #1 in the UK.
Nicki Minaj's return crashed in at #1 in the US, the first R&B woman to do that since Lauryn Hill in 1998 apparently.
