Marvin Gaye - Greatest Hits - Live in '76
Almost an hour from Amsterdam, mixing his classics with some of his many duets for a change. Also worthy of comment was his attire, green & yellow
Marvin Gaye: Live at Montreux 1980
Just over an hour this time, and without the duets, and in a startling scarlet jacket. Both these shows emphasised what a talent he truly was.
What's Going On? The Life and Death of Marvin Gaye
In short, his dad was a complete bastard to him, and it hampered his entire life. His musical career was beset by problems with his label, and his attempts to expand his range of subject matter met constant opposition (though many agree his magnum opus 'What's Going On?' is one of the ATG albums). Ultimately, his father put him out of his misery. A sad waste of a great talent.
(Unsure if I've seen this 2005 doc before, it still felt fresh. Clarke Peters read extracts of Marvin's writing. He had a bad time with his dad, and his career forked when Berry Gordy didn't think much of What's Going On? His married life was a struggle, and his act deteriorated before his father shot him.)

Music Icons: Marvin Gaye
The "prince of soul". He started performing at school, by which time he already had issues with his dad. He formed a vocal quartet, and backed Bo Diddley. As a session musician in Detroit, he was signed by Motown. His 4-octave range was almost as much help as marrying Berry Gordy's sister. He made popular duets in the 60s, especially with Tammi Terrell. Her collapse and death affected him badly. His solo triumphs with I Heard It Through The Grapevine and What's Going On? led to rifts with Berry Gordy. His brother's suffering in Vietnam also led to more political material. He suffered with drugs and stage fright. He divorced his wife, and faced high tax bills. He spent time in London, then Ostend. He signed to Columbia and made (Sexual) Healing. But depression led him back home, and a row with his father ending with his death.

CNN Special Report - What's Going On? : Marvin Gaye's Anthem for the Ages
The dreary Don Lemon retells the story of a landmark album from half a century ago. Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson led the names willing to talk shop, but Maxwell, Sheila E and Spike Lee were also useful, Nelson George can be relied on, and Marvin's sister Zeola at least was a cut above the biographers and historians.

This has the feeling of a programme I've seen before. I note Clarke Peters read as Marvin, so it may have been a similar show, or even the same above one under a different name. Some contributors talked of his death being 15 years before, though the credits said this was a 2002 version - which is plausible if it took time to put together. His two wives, his brother Frankie, his daughter Nona, and various musicians who worked with him, spoke warmly of his talent. The 1970s were a struggle, and his demons were very much internal. Some clearly tried to help the man, others saw him as a useful money supply. Performance footage filled up a fair chunk of the time, especially in the first half. Some less familiar tracks thus enlivened the more over-familiar.

With the recent 40th anniversary of his death, came the news of a discovery of "lost" MG material, in Belgium:

A fuller account, well over and hour and a half. He was in good form in July 1980 and made time for a medley of his works with the late Tammi Terrell. He closed down with What's Going On?
