Mercury Music Prize Empty Mercury Music Prize

Nominees for the 2011 Barclaycard Mercury Prize include Adele, Tinie Tempah and PJ Harvey, who took home the prize in 2001. Elbow, who collected the gong in 2008, have also been shortlisted.

Other nods go to King Creosote and Jon Hopkins, Metronomy, Katy B, Ghostpoet, Anna Calvi, James Blake, Everything Everything and Gwilym Simcock.

The overall winner will be revealed on September 6, when the £20,000 prize is to be awarded. All artists will perform during a ceremony leading up to the announcement, which will be aired on BBC Two. The nominees - who must be from either the UK or Ireland – have all released a studio album in the past year.

PJ Harvey is the favorite to win this year’s Mercury Prize. After releasing her eighth studio album, the singer was as surprised as anyone about the favorable reactions it received.

Harvey told the Observer: “It’s been overwhelming. People from all walks of life tell me how much it’s touched them. It’s a wonderful feeling, and not one I’m used to – the feeling that people were hungry for this kind of work.”
Adele is probably a likely tip, but given the sometime preference of left-field winners, it might as easily go to Katy B or Tinie Tempah.

Oops, forgot to update this.

PJ Harvey won, becoming the first 2-time winner (having previously won in 2001). Her concept album, Let England Shake, clearly appealed to the judges as a political winner.

Not sure why I forget updating this every year. Anyway, the 2018 winners were announced this week, Hyundai currently being the sponsors. Wolf Alice were a perhaps unexpected choice, rather akin to alt-J a few years back, for their Visions Of A Life album. Lily Allen, another of the nominees, tweeted to the effect that she felt she had been robbed. Grace in defeat, eh?

This was awarded last night, to rapper Dave, for his debut album Psychodrama, which has been much acclaimed.

Hyundai Mercury Prize 2020
Instead of the usual live show, this was merely a runthrough of all 12 acts, starting with previous nominee Michael Kiwanuka.

The winner was named the following night on a more live show. Wouldn't you know, it was Michael Kiwanuka at last.

Later w/Jools Holland - Michael Kiwanuka
The start of a new series, still in the one-to-one format. Jools did speak to MMP judge Annie Mac about the contest and the contenders. Then Michael was announced as the winner, then he did a proper chat with Jools. They brought up the late Bill Withers, whom Michael managed to meet and get a thumbs up from. Isaac Hayes and Brittany Howard also came up, in the latter case because she was in Alabama Shakes, whom Michael supported on tour. He did get to play one of his own songs at the end.
