New romantic/general pop veterans celebrating 30 years in the music business, and they have a new Mark Ronson-produced album, 'All You Need Is Now', from which the title track is being used as the single:

All You Need Is Now

Other classics they will be remembered for include:

Hungry Like The Wolf

They really made hey with videos in the 1980's, such as:

Rio

But they also showed versatility with later work like this 1990's effort:

Ordinary World

And continued to hit big in the 2000's, too:

(Reach Up For The) Sunrise

Now back with most of their original line-up, the odds are they've years more hits to come Very Happy

Their summer UK tour has been postponed indefinitely, as Simon Le Bon has strained his vocal cords, and doctors aren't sure how long it might take him to recover Neutral No

Watched a couple of good documentaries on them recently.

Behind The Music (Remastered) is a series covering all sorts of bands. In this case, it concentrated heavily on the early years (understandably), with acceleration through the Warren Cucurillo years, the exits of various Taylors, and then their return in 2004, and recent work with Mark Ronson. Though Andy receives praise for his guitar work, his current non-involvement with the band suggests a lingering feeling that he thinks they need him more than he needs them, which is far from true.

The other was from the Classic Albums series, and featured their 2nd album, Rio. What is clear from this is that whilst it would be easy to think Le Bon is the keystone of the band, without Nick Rhodes' efforts, there would be a huge gap, and John Taylor's pretty useful, too. I think the point is that whilst Le Bon draws the attention, as classic frontmen do, it's someone like Rhodes who's working away in the engine room at the same time and making sure there's some depth beneath the surface. Not to mention Le Bon writes good lyrics, and Rhodes composes good tunes.

Anyway, with 30-odd years already on the clock, it seems safe to suppose there'll be a lot more music to come from them in the future.

Working For The Skin Trade
This was a concert from their 1987 'Strange Behaviour' tour, with Roger & Andy Taylor already gone and Warren Cucurillo in place. As you'd expect, a pretty solid hour-long show, with bases covered (Skin Trade, Save A Prayer etc)

Songbook
This series sees musicians interviewed about their influences and songwriting. A 2-part special saw the whole DD band talking about songs like 'The Chauffeur' and many others, performing a selection in front on an invited audience. They always strike me as a friendly band, and since they reformed, (or at least as Simon, Nick, John & Roger) they've seemed an even stronger unit.

Ooh, my copy of 'Rio' has arrived in the post, you'll have to excuse me...

Duran Duran forced to cancel rest of tour
Duran Duran have been forced to cancel the remaining two dates of their world tour because keyboard player Nick Rhodes is still too ill to perform.

After previously calling off the final four dates of their US leg, their two Canadian dates scheduled for Friday and Saturday will also not go ahead.

In happier news, John Taylor's forthcoming book In The Pleasure Groove: Love, Death and Duran Duran is out in hardback on September 13th.

I picked up a copy a few weeks back for the reduced price of £2.99 (though I gather it's cheaper still elsewhere).

It's a good read, though, moving at a good pace with short chapters and plenty of pictures. JT covers his early years and how he formed DD with Nick Rhodes & others, and how their 80s success felt. His troubles with drugs take the shine off the glory, and he eventually leaves the band for sobriety. Once he gets clean the action jumps forward in rapid moves, but he seems in a lot happier place these days cheers

TOTP2: Duran Duran Special
Another 2010 half-hour compilation covering their early years (including lesser-remembered My Own Way) and ending with Notorious, though I'm sure they would have featured later on. The sarcastic introductions didn't add to the experience, but the music is still great. It's interesting to notice how much Andy Taylor contributed during his time.

Wild Boys: The Story of Duran Duran
I mistakenly thought this might be a new one, but it was actually from 2000. The familiar names came up as usual, though this was before the 2004 "original line-up" reunion, so Andy & Roger were pretty much obliterated. Nile Rogers and Debbie Harry managed to get involved, which says it all about documentaries, and Paul Morley obligingly rubbished everything they achieved. Lou Reed, Iggy Pop and Claudia Schiffer were some of the less expected faces singing their praises. Hindsight, of course, added extra entertainment.

Heyday TV: Duran Duran - The Ultimate Review
Amusing career lookback, presented by scornful Graham McTavish, which seemed to be almost an anti-celebration given much of the comment was how crap DD were, how they couldn't play well, or sing well, or much else. Despite this, some moments were treated with great respect and admiration ('Ordinary World' and its parent album seemed more notable as a high watermark during a long bad spell running from around 1986 to 2003). Manager Paul Berrow and EMI A&R guy Dave Ambrose helped raise the tone above the mere arguing of journalists. Overall, it might have been a bit begrudging, but it was complimentary.

Duran Duran - A Diamond In The Mind
From the MEN Arena, Manchester, in 2011, and promoting their "All You Need Is Now" album, the lads ran through a wide range of hits and tracks from the current set (and this show was edited from a lot longer selection). The crowd seemed spirited enough about the new numbers, and the band touched bases from all over their long career. I do wonder when there will be a new album, though.

Duran Duran Release New Song With Mark Ronson, Nile Rodgers, Janelle Monae

Duran Duran have released a new single, Pressure Off, produced by Mark Ronson and featuring both Nile Rodgers and Janelle Monae.

Off their upcoming new album Paper Gods, which will be the first in over five years and will hopefully make-up for 2010’s middling All You Need Is Now, the new track which dropped overnight is some down right disco-ey Britpop magic.

Those inimitable Nile Rodgers guitar licks ride prominent alongside Janelle offering a lighter counterpart to Duran Duran’s Simon Le Bon, with the pop-side of the equation really ramped up for what could very well be a monster-hit.

Sounds OK. Always glad to hear from them, although I'd have hoped they'd not bother with Ronson again. Sadly, I suspect his involvement was a pre-requisite to give the album any chance at all Rolling Eyes

Duran Duran's "Pressure Off are officially in the Top 40 at Hot AC radio.

Shawn Mendes' "Stitches" and Duran Duran's "Pressure Off (ft. Janelle Monae & Nile Rodgers)" are officially in the Top 40 at Hot AC radio.

Already a Top 20 hit at pop radio, Shawn Mendes’ “Stitches” this week reaches the Top 40 at hot adult contemporary.

Thanks to its 492 tracking week spins (+128), “Stitches” rises seven places to #36 on this week’s Mediabase Hot AC chart.

“Stitches” is one of two additions to this week’s Top 40.

Duran Duran’s “Pressure Off (featuring Janelle Monae and Nile Rodgers),” the other, enters at #39.

Spun 416 times during the August 30-September 5 tracking period, “Pressure Off” bests last week’s position by two places.

MTV World Stage: Duran Duran
From Oct 2015, at the Piazza del Duomo in Milan. Mark Ronson helped them with Pressure Off, but they could manage everything else alright, from opener Wild Boys through to closer Rio. They also did recent single "What are the Chances?" which I feel echoes their classic "The Chauffeur".

Duran Duran to headline at Eden Project for BBC Music Day
Pop group Duran Duran will headline a concert at Cornwall's Eden Project at the culmination of BBC Music Day on Friday, 3 June.

The band will play hits from across their four-decade career, including Wild Boys, Rio and tracks from their current album, Paper Gods.

The gig will follow a day of musical events across the UK.

Amateur and professional musicians alike will be encouraged to take part, and Duran Duran will act as ambassadors for the event.

"We're really proud to be ambassadors for BBC Music Day and to bring the Paper Gods tour to the stunning surroundings of the Eden Project," said the band, in a statement. "We've wanted to play there for many years.

"We love the idea of BBC Music Day, it's a fantastic way to bring people together across the country and to promote live music. So, whether it's taking part in one of the events or watching or listening the artists who are part of this year's celebration, we hope everyone gets involved."

Duran Duran at Eden
As above, the climax to BBC Music Day saw the 80s legends turn in a solid set notable for a medley of Planet Earth and Space Oddity, followed by New Moon on Monday and (Reach Up For The) Sunrise. During the encore, Le Bon also referred to Little Red Corvette at the end of Save A Prayer. Another Eden performer, Laura Mvula, helped out on Notorious, too.

Duran Duran have been rebuffed in the USA:

Duran Duran 'shocked' after losing legal copyright battle
The group had argued that US copyright laws gave them the right to call for a reversion of copyright after 35 years.
Girls on Film, Rio and A View to a Kill were among the disputed tracks.
The group had sought to terminate the grant to Gloucester Place Music Ltd, part of EMI Music Publishing, of US copyrights in their first three albums.
The albums - Duran Duran, Rio and Seven and the Ragged Tiger - contained some of the band's biggest hits, among them Hungry Like the Wolf and The Reflex.
A View to a Kill, the theme song to the 1985 James Bond film of that name, was among other songs the band had sought to reclaim.
But lawyers for Gloucester Place Music Ltd successfully argued that English laws of contract stopped them from doing so.
Copyright is the sort of issue that reminds you that many never expected rock & roll to last that long anyway.

Duran Duran - There's Something You Should Know
Marking their 40th anniversary, sort of, this was a pretty familiar re-treading of their story, skipping a few albums along the way to fit in the main points such as working with Nile Rodgers, or why Andy Taylor left the 2nd time. No mention of Warren Cucurillo at all. But there were some celebrity fans, like Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, and Boy George.

Duran Duran - A Night In
Amusing hour with the main four talking through their influences, and watching clips thereof, whether films, telly shows, musicians or even adverts. There were some surprising choices, but mostly familiar stuff.

Duran Duran - Unstaged
A 2012 gig at the Mayan Theatre in downtown LA, directed by David Lynch. They were joined by Kelis, Mark Ronson, Beth Ditto, and My Chemical Romance's Gerard Way. They didn't do either The Reflex or Is There Something I Should Know? but they did a lot from their then-current album All You Need Is Now. They had some interesting rarer tracks there, although it's telling how swathes of their career are completely forgotten.

Tomorrow is the 12th annual Record Store Day:
Now in its 12th year, Record Store Day is hugely important for local, independent stores.
More than 90,000 albums and singles were bought at last year's event - making it the biggest sales day outside Christmas for many shop owners.

Amongst rare treats available from Bob Dylan, Prince, Bananarama and Nichelle Nicholls, comes an 11-track effort from Duran Duran:
In 1984, at the height of their fame, Duran Duran played to 150,000 people over three nights at California's Oakland Coliseum.
The concerts were filmed for TV specials that aired around the globe, but were never officially released... until now.
The 11-track record includes live versions of Girls On Film, Is There Something I Should Know and Save A Prayer - which Simon Le Bon dedicated to Marvin Gaye, who had been shot dead days earlier.

They're doing a gig next Tuesday for NASA, marking the 50th anniversary of the Moon landings:

With doors opening at 8 p.m., the group will begin a 90-minute set at 10:30 p.m. Concert tickets are $300 and it does not include parking or daily admission, meaning no early entrance will be permitted.
Apparently, there's a long connection between the band and the space agency, going back to Planet Earth, of course  Surprised

Something of an upgrade on the above (a mere 11 years later), but again heavily weighted towards their first 5 years or so, with only Ordinary World and (Reach Up for the) Sunrise from after 1986. My Own Way and Friends of Mine turned up again, despite being fairly minor parts of the story.
