Phil Everly Dead: 'Everly Brothers' Member Dies At 74 RIP
Phil Everly, whose high, close-harmony singing with his older brother, Don, made the Everly Brothers one of the biggest rock and country acts of the 1950s and early 1960s, died on Friday at the age of 74, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Everly died in the Los Angeles suburb of Burbank of complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, his wife Patti told the Times for a story on the paper's website.
Representatives for Phil Everly could not immediately be reached by Reuters for comment on Friday evening.
The Everly Brothers profoundly influenced 1960s-era groups and singer-songwriters ranging from Beatles John Lennon and Paul McCartney, who early in their careers called themselves the Foreverly Brothers, to Simon and Garfunkel, the Byrds, the Hollies and the Beach Boys.
"Perhaps even more powerfully than Elvis Presley, the Everly Brothers melded country with the emerging sound of Fifties rock & roll," Rolling Stone magazine said in placing the brothers at No. 33 on its list of the "100 Greatest Artists."
Phil and Don had an onstage breakup in 1973 that led to a decade-long estrangement, but Phil told Time magazine their relationship had endured.
"Don and I are infamous for our split," Phil said, "but we're closer than most brothers. Harmony singing requires that you enlarge yourself, not use any kind of suppression. Harmony is the ultimate love."

Nice to know the Everly Brothers still have cachet for their contribution to music, as seen on news coverage of his death, though if they hadn't had that 10-year hiatus, things would probably have been very different.

Devo's Bob Casale Dies At 61 RIP
Bob Casale, a founding member of New Wave pioneers Devo, died at the age of 61 on Monday (Feb. 17). A statement from Casale's brother Gerald, also a member of the group, confirms that the cause of death was heart failure.
The Casale brothers formed Devo in Akron, Ohio in 1972 with Mark Motherbaugh and Robert Mothersbaugh (Bob Casale was known as "Bob 2" in the group, with Robert Mothersbaugh called "Bob 1"). The group's spastic post-punk earned a cult following in the mid-70's, and 1978 debut album "Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!," produced by Brian Eno, earned critical acclaim.
Devo's biggest success on the Billboard charts came with its iconic single "Whip It," which reached No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1980. The act charted two more singles: "Working In the Coal Mine" (No. 43 in 1981) and "Theme from 'Doctor Detroit'" (No. 59 in 1983). The album that contained "Whip It," 1980's "Freedom of Choice," was the group's highest-charting effort on the Billboard 200. It hit No. 22 and spent 51 weeks on the list, and was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (for one million copies sold).
The band's 2010 album, "Something for Everybody," ended a 20-year album hiatus for the group, and hit No. 30 on the Billboard 200 and No. 5 on the Alternative Albums chart. Bob Casale served as Devo's guitarist, keyboardist and backing vocalist for most of its four-decade run.
"As an original member of Devo, Bob Casale was there in the trenches with me from the beginning," says Gerald Casale in a statement. "He was my level-headed brother, a solid performer and talented audio engineer, always giving more than he got. He was excited about the possibility of Mark Mothersbaugh allowing Devo to play shows again. His sudden death from conditions that lead to heart failure came as a total shock to us all."
Bob Casale, born in July 1952, is survived by his wife Lisa, his son Alex and his daughter Samantha.

This one's a bit belated, but still worth mentioning: film director Malik Bendjelloul died at the tragically early age of 36 (indeed, he was only a couple of months younger than me). He directed the superb award-winning documentary "Searching For Sugar Man", which covered the incredible true story of the musician Rodriguez who found unlikely superstardom in South Africa.

Horace Silver, US jazz musician, dies aged 85
And in a bad week for jazz:
Jimmy Scott, US jazz singer and Twin Peaks star, dies aged 88
RIP for them both
Silver, a native of Norwalk, Connecticut, was shaped by the Portuguese influence in the islands of Cape Verde, from where his family emigrated to the United States.
Playing alongside noted jazz musicians such as bassist Oscar Pettiford and drummer Art Blakey, Silver, who played piano and saxophone, recorded exclusively for Blue Note Records over three decades before founding his own label, Silveto Records.
Silver composed music featuring percussive, hard-driving beats that was inspired by his philosophy of holistic self-help, jazz critic Leonard Feather wrote in his Encyclopedia of Jazz.
His most notable works include Song For My Father, inspired by Cape Verdean folk music and gospel-driven The Preacher. His work also appeared on a number of Miles Davis' albums, including 1954's Walkin'.
And in a bad week for jazz:
Jimmy Scott, US jazz singer and Twin Peaks star, dies aged 88
The vocalist, whose first major hit was Everybody's Somebody's Fool in 1949 alongside the Lionel Hampton Band, gathered new generations of fans during the 1960s and in the 1990s when he toured with Lou Reed and sang on the track, Sycamore Trees, for the series finale of Twin Peaks.
RIP for them both

Gerry Goffin, dies at 75
Up On the Roof (the Drifters),
One Fine Day (the Chiffons),
I’m Into Something Good (Herman’s Hermits),
Take Good Care of My Baby (Bobby Vee),

Pleasant Valley Sunday (the Monkees),
Goin’ Back (the Byrds)
and Natural Woman (Aretha Franklin),
RIP
Weird this, I only watched that prog on Carole King last week, and he didn't feature, so I wondered at his health. Just some of his credits:He was the man who wrote (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, the lyrical magician behind some of the most perfectly formed songs ever to grace the airwaves, one half of the most celebrated and successful pop songwriting partnership outside of Lennon and McCartney. Gerry Goffin, who has died aged 75, was a backroom boy, not a face known to millions. But with an incredible catalogue of songs co-written with one-time wife Carole King, he earned a place in the pantheon of popular music’s all-time greats.

It's another sad day for R&B, as Bobby Womack has died at the age of 70. He had had battles with illness in recent years, though produced a critically-acclaimed comeback record in 2012, 'The Bravest Man In The Universe'. Amongst his more famous works were 'It's All Over Now', covered to great success by the Rolling Stones, and 'Daylight' covered to great effect in recent years by Kelly Rowland. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009.
