Nirvana...
The grunge gods who blazed for just a short time, but set the music world alight in 1991 and 1992, and remain fondly remembered by their fans. Here are a few of their highlights:
Smells Like Teen Spirit (Like, duh)
Come As You Are
Lithium
In Bloom
Heart-Shaped Box

All Apologies: Kurt Cobain: 10 Years On
Over an hour running through Kurt's formative years, his work with Nirvana and how fame became too much for him to take, with talking heads including mostly friends and fans. Most unexpected was Steve Diggle (of The Buzzcocks) who provided a different angle than the morass of musos and hangers-on.
Nirvana - Up Close and Personal
Some intriguing contributors here - biographer Charles R Cross and Kurt's grandfather Leland seemed to represent both sides of the late frontman. Friends and guitar teachers from his home area seemed fresher voices. What struck me most was the idea that before his death, he was set to split Nirvana, who'd got to the end of their road, and also break-up with Courtney Love. Just 2 massive changes which would have seen the subsequent rock story go a completely different way.

Nirvana: In Performance
A muddled show again judging their few key telly efforts, firstly a concert from Rome in 1991, a couple of Saturday Night Live showings, and a final gig in 1994 with the wheels already coming off. The premise that 'Nevermind' displacing 'Dangerous' as US #1 album spelt the end of grunge is an intriguing point of timing. But the idea that the band were played out even before Cobain's suicide remains a convincing one.

Classic Albums - Nirvana - Nevermind
Quite a busy edition, with Grohl, Novoselic and Vig all proud of their work, Thurston Moore and Steve Diggle adding the appraisal of fellow musicians, and assorted record company and other folks spoke fondly, whilst David Fricke did his usual thing, and biographer Charles R Cross filled in what he felt he needed to.

Kurt Cobain - Too Young To Die
More over-familiar narration, of how a young musical prodigy from Aberdeen, Washington, changed the world of rock music for a while, but whom the elders of Aberdeen wish there to be no memorial record of the man, despite a statue having been commissioned, paid for and completed. The lack of involvement of Novoselic, Grohl, Love or Vig sums up the official nature of this project, as in its own way does the inclusion of biographer Charles Cross.
Off Camera w/Sam Jones: Dave Grohl
Much of this 2013 chat was about Grohl's "Sound City" film, his first directing effort, which snowballed out of being a small tribute, to a lengthier one when all the people he asked to be in it did so. It was a learning experience, just as when he started drumming. His guitar and song-writing in the Foo Fighters were more his thing. But he keeps getting respect for his drumming. Though I'm not a Foos fan, I can't deny he's a smart, likeable guy.

Sound City
Monster tribute led by Dave Grohl, a legendary recording studio, where many contributors helped sing its praises, and its Neve mixing desk. There seemed to be more lows than highs, but the nub of the tale is that after the studio was closed forever, Grohl took the desk and installed it in his gaff, and chose to celebrate it by recording an album featuring former users of the desk, "Studio 606". Grohl was as chuffed to be working with Rick Springfield as its healthy to be. He even got Paul McCartney to pop in and rock out. So, an enthralling story, engagingly told.

This is a Call, by Paul Brannigan
Popular biography of Dave Grohl, this falls into three thirds: pre-Nirvana, Nirvana and post-Nirvana. It puts Dave's story together well, making sure each band project and collaborator gets their due. The all-too-brief Nirvana period works well, not making starry eyes about Kurt Cobain, and certainly not about Courtney Love. Of course, Foo Fighters has been Dave's #1 job for the last 20+ years, and even though I'm not a fan, the book does at least make them feel interesting. So, probably worth its plaudits.

MTV Unplugged: Nirvana
A gentle show from November 1993 to help plus their final album (and which itself became a posthumous #1 LP for them in the UK when some bright spark realised its potential). A spirited and enjoyable performance, and they brought on the Meat Puppets to help out at one point.

Heavier Than Heaven, by Charles R Cross (2001)
Arguably the definitive book on Kurt Cobain, CRC has done the work through interviews and pieced together the true story of the doomed singer. What it does correct is the point that Krist Novoselic did more for the Nirvana story than Dave Grohl (nevertheless the arrival of Grohl as the conclusion of an interminable search for the right drummer elicits a cheer that the good times are set to start). The idea that Nirvana were over before Kurt's suicide is less clear, and the prospect of Kurt divorcing Courtney also seems unlikely.

Re: Nirvana...
Curious auction news - a cardigan owned (and worn) by Kurt, and unwashed since 1993, has just sold at auction for way over the estimate figure.

More auction larks, as a guitar played by Kurt during their MTV Unplugged show has sold for BIG money:
Kurt Cobain's MTV Unplugged guitar sells for $6m at auction

Cobain - Montage of Heck
This 2015 effort keeps it broadly simple and is the better for it. Besides members of his family, the band are represented by Krist Novoselic, and his personal life by Courtney Love. The absence of Dave Grohl seems curious, and Frances must be in her 20s and presumably kept out of the limelight (though I did read a story the other week about her blowing all her inheritance before she got herself together). A lot of home movies means Kurt is more present than might be expected.

Brian Johnson's Life on the Road: Dave Grohl
A lengthy edition, as Dave and Brian discussed road life in vans, the bands he was in before Nirvana, the whirlwind of life in Nirvana, and how things developed with the Foo Fighters. He talked about the Sound City studio board, about directing the Sonic Highways series, and wanting to inspire the next generation.

When Nirvana Came to Britain
It's 30 years since Nevermind, etc... the grunge legends came when they were nobodies, and even before Dave Grohl was in the band, but they had warm feelings for the place. Krist and Dave are great as ever, some of the many promoters were pleasant and other presenters and journalists had fond memories. Not just the festival successes, but also extra gigs like an acoustic one in a pub too.

Re: Nirvana...
Later w/Jools Holland - Dave Grohl
He notably was interviewed somewhere other than Jools' usual studio. He talked about enjoying playing the show with Foo Fighters, acting up and being chided by kd lang. He was plugging an autobiography, The Storyteller. He managed to meet Little Richard, who was politely complimentary. The Foos have reached the 25 year mark. He met Dhani Harrison and was invited to the afterparty after a tribute concert afterparty where he also met Paul McCartney. He praised and picked My Morning Jacket and Radiohead among his choices.

In Utero: Under Review
An odd but interesting one, largely being the usual formation story, but prefacing the making of their fateful final record. Biographer Charles Cross was one of many journalists, though at least a small number of people who actually were involved as producers or past band members were there too. Most tracks were discussed, with the album being considered a deliberate contrast to Nevermind, and arguably also a better end result.

It Happened Here - Kurt Cobain
Another cheap n tacky effort, visiting Aberdeen, mainly, though Seattle and Los Angeles were also relevant. A couple of biographers, and a couple of friends and family, managed to get through the story between them, which was still pretty rough, and even the up bits just led to more down ones.
