The "Godfather of Soul", the "Hardest-Working Man In Show Business", the man of many nicknames, he blazed through the 1960s and 1970s with a plethora of songs full of provocative messages. His personality was sometimes less than stellar, though, and his trait of fining band members for mistakes seemed less about perfectionism than tyranny. Still, he may be gone, but his music remains unforgotten:

Living In America

"Soul Brother Number One", that's another one Razz

Charles Bradley - Soul of America
More heart-rending soul material, as a mildly illiterate James Brown impersonator finally stepped into the limelight as himself, and his voice and material (and a helpful record label) showed that true talent tells. Perhaps the unsung hero of the film was his producer, Gabriel Roth, who understood the enormous difficulties Bradley would face in trying to become a star at the age of 62. Bradley remains worth hearing.

Get On Up - Special
A short look at the forthcoming James Brown biopic, talking to director Tate Taylor, star Chadwick Boseman, co-producer Mick Jagger, and other cast members such as Dan Ackroyd and Jill Scott. Looks like a film worth checking out.

Mr Dynamite: The Rise of James Brown
He rose from the depths of poverty, but was left with a life-long sense of dis-trust. He was a demanding band-leader, and tight-fisted too. But he was funky, and a political animal at times. The story stopped around the mid-70s, possibly a wise idea. Mick Jagger made a somewhat random inclusion, although as he was co-producer it made more sense.

James Brown - Live at Chastain Park
A decent hour from 1985 or so, he had plenty of classics from the off, even throwing Georgia On My Mind in there to suck up to his roots. Finished with Please Please Please.

James Brown - Mr Dynamite
Same name, different show. This was a 2 hour melding of 2 separate shows from 1990 (?), relating his rise from rage to riches, with an array of friends and family singing his praises (as well as him doing the same). Stevie Wonder, Revd. Jesse Jackson, Bootsy Collins, Little Richard, Dick Clark and Berry Gordy all had something to say, with the later generations represented by Bobby Brown, Heavy D, Jazzie B, Chuck D and Flavor Flav. There was also stuff from a 1986 appearance on some morning talk show, which was a challenge. He had his ups and downs, but his musical legacy remains impressive.

The Sound of: James Brown
Again a familiar story, but this 1987 prog at least covered his appearance in Rocky IV, as well as previous film excursions such as Ski Party. He claimed to have started Rap in the 1960s, which is debatable. Also sang gospel with Elvis (and he did breakthrough at the same time as Elvis, to be fair).

The Lost James Brown Tapes
Some gig in 1979 thought lost forever has been found, and it was much as you'd expect from a JB gig. Some amusement from a post-gig chat to the man himself, including his praise for Elvis Presley and Bob Marley.

Mojo Working: James Brown
Possibly the last in this series, featuring clips from the "Lost James Brown Tapes" gig reviewed previously, and with plenty of talking heads. Apart from being described as "the first rapper" and "could easily have been black President", I particularly liked Konda Mason's line "He don't have to do nothing but just 'UH!' - that's a performance!"

Discovering: James Brown
Grew up in extreme poverty, developed a strong work ethic and quickly developed a song & dance act as a child. Made a good contact in Bobby Bird, and had a hit with Please Please Please in 1956. His 1963 Live at the Apollo LP became a classic. Managed to upstage the Rolling Stones in 1964. Got an improved record deal, then released even greater material like Papa's Got a Brand New Bag and It's a Man's Man's Man's Man's World. Had a pay dispute with his band, and simply put together a new band instead. He supported Richard Nixon as U.S. President. Won a Grammy in 1987 for Living in America. His songs are a rich source of hip-hop samples. He had a spell in prison, played Glastonbury, and died at the end of 2006. A full life.

Sadly, Bradley has lost a battle with cancer:

Somehow it doesn't seem that surprising if there is any correlation between tough times & etc. RIP Sad

James Brown - One Special Night
From 1983, I believe, a show at the Beverly Theatre, with special guest BB King. BB did the first few songs, then handed over to James, who ran through many old favourites, and even produced a great stunt in calling Michael Jackson himself forth from the audience. Despite reluctance, Michael busted a few Brown-esque moves, before returning whence he came and letting the show carry on. BB joined James for the finale, and altogether it seemed a warmer show than sometimes seems the case.

James Brown - Live at Montreux
He had a go at the world renowned jazz festival in July 1981, from where he did many recognisable hits and a few others. One section I enjoyed came in the middle where he named some of those who had died and called on the audience to show appreciation. His list went Elvis Presley, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Janis Joplin, Little Willie John (for Fever), Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon... and then he included the rest of the Beatles, and BB King. Well, it was his list.

Electric Proms '06: James Brown
He came to the Roundhouse in Camden to deliver a fairly ordinary set, enlivened by guest turns from Sugababes, and actor Max Beesley who got to play piano on Georgia On My Mind. His final number included the London Community Gospel Choir.
