It Actually Happened

Guns N' Roses stars Axl Rose, Slash and Duff McKagan have performed together onstage for the first time since 1993.

The US rock band - one of the biggest groups of the late 1980s and early 1990s - played an intimate concert at the Troubadour in Los Angeles on Friday night which was reportedly formalised just a day earlier.

Hundreds of die-hard fans had queued up for only 250 tickets that were on sale.

Mobile phones and cameras were banned from the concert but some fans still managed to put photos of the reunited group on social media.

One of the fiercest American rock bands of the 1980s, Axl Rose, Slash, Steven Adler and Duff McKagan shook the system with their Appetite For Destruction LP, which set them on something of a collision course, including the spectacles of releasing twin albums on the same day, and then spending almost 2 decades between releases. As well as many fine songs of their own, they also often turned their hands to some spirited and surprising cover versions (indeed a whole album at one point). They recently reconvened in their original line-up for the first time in aeons, but Axl has also been busy guest-vocalling for Axl. One thing about GnR - rarely boring. Here are a few of their best moments:

A Making Of for Slash & co's new album, "World On Fire". The assorted Conspirators seem chuffed to be working with a world-class rock legend in Slash, the guitar hero himself is chilled with his work, and Myles Kennedy does his singing. Quite amiable, really.

Some predictable contributors here, with Mary Anne Hobbs presenting, and Malcolm Dome and others able to convincingly relate the shock impact of GNR, and how the volatility of Axl Rose ultimately spelt their end as a world-conquering rock force.

Slash ft Myles Kennedy Live - Made In Stoke 24/7/11
A "hometown" gig for Slash, who despite his incredible rock pedigree with Guns N Roses and others, is always lightly linked to coming from the Midlands town of Stoke on Trent. This lengthy gig covered material from GNR, Slash's own solo stuff and Velvet Revolver. Some of them I even recognised. The rest were impressive, too. Kennedy was a pretty good singer, too. All in all, worth it.

Discovering: Guns N Roses
Rock maniacs from Indiana and beyond, who rose to prominence in LA, released a legendary debut and a half-decent follow-up, 2 huge double albums and some covers, and finally descended into acrimonious hiatus, whilst frontman Axl Rose decided he didn't like the band being full of people as talented as him, and took 14 years to produce a new album. Nobody much expects to ever hear another one from them, and a theoretical reunion seems unlikely.

The Most Dangerous Band In The World - The Return of Guns N Roses
A lengthy but typically entertaining recounting of the legendary 80s rockers who blazed brightly but then started to suffer line-up troubles, and frontman-being-a-nutcase problems. Apparently, the original line-up with be at Coachella 2016, but time will tell, I guess. Some of them have not weathered the years as well as others.

Matt Sorum and director Andy Morahan were interviewed separately to relate the saga of the Estranged trilogy. Morahan was fondest of a video for a track called "Garden of Eden", which must be one of their littlest known tracks. The comedy of November Rain's overblown saga counterpointed with Slash's outdoors guitar solo shows this was a band which could play for laughs sometimes. The dolphin motif of Estranged was at least a surprise solution to the story.

The Ronnie Wood Show: Slash
Slash met Ronnie before he was famous through a mutual friend who named him Slash. He saw the Stones live. He'd played at Muhammed Ali's 70th birthday party, I think. They played on each other's albums (Ron & Slash, that is). Happy stories of working with Michael Jackson - they played the Give In To Me track which Slash hadn't heard in years. Discussed the Corrs, and Jimi Hendrix. Slash apparently conceived one of his children whilst staying at Ron's house. There were future plans on the boil, too.

HARDtalk: Duff McKagan
This repeat from 2011 came after he'd written his book. He wanted to explain how drugs and drinking to excess led to his pancreas exploding. He at one point was in such pain he wanted to die. But he recovered. GnR's success was very rapid, from bumming along to sudden world domination. He doesn't worry about the band's misogynistic lyrics, his daughters will understand. Most feedback he gets from fans is positive. His journey to sobriety was mostly by mountain bike. He realised his financial knowledge was nil, so he went to Seattle University and got sorted. He felt some people will self-destruct regardless. Interesting bloke.

Slash - Raised on the Sunset Strip
The usual story, from growing up in Stoke, but then really growing up in Laurel Canyon. He met Steven Adler at school, and things snowballed. He learned the guitar, and became impressed that Motley Crue could get chicks. So he put a band together (Duff McKagen and Matt Sorum were here, Axl unsurprisingly was not), and they made their 1st record. He got his top hat image from Alice Cooper. Velvet Revolver was chaotic (and they knew Scott Weiland was doomed from the start). He got a pacemaker in the early 1990s. He seems really pleased with the band line-up with Myles Kennedy (this piece was clearly coinciding with the 2nd Conspirators record, c.2014). He's always playing guitar, even in downtime. Lemmy, Steve Lukather, Nikki Sixx, Joe Perry and Dave Grohl were among those singing his praises.

It's Only Easy & Other Lies
The Duff McKagan story, pretty much, with him giving on-stage talks from his book, plus the usual footage of interviews and so on, with Slash, Matt Sorum, Nikki Sixx, several members of Duff's family, his doctor, his wife Susan Holmes and so on. His daughter Grace already has her own band, so the future looks rocking, too. Duff's character is maybe best summed up by the sensible attitude he took to getting an education after his pancreas exploded.

A shorter show than some of these, he's got a new album with Myles Kennedy & co, called Living The Dream. The demo stage started in 2015, but became side-lined by a revival spell for Guns N Roses. He still has a passion for his business, and trusts Myles with his lyric ideas. He enjoys finding solo improvs when playing live. His eldest son is a drummer in a rock band, so they have something to talk about. His younger kid is into hip-hop, with an old skool taste like her old man. He now only keeps a snake in a zoo, and has several cats at home. He supports charities helping homeless teenagers in LA, his adoptive hometown.

Guns N Roses - Appetite For Democracy - Live at the Hard Rock Casino
From Las Vegas in 2012, Axl led his band through quite a lengthy set, most of which I recognised (amusingly, there was a track list at the end, but it was in alphabetical order). It's something when the best point is that he seemed happy (or that night anyway) enough. Good rocking show.

Sammy talks about the 4th series of the show, of which this is the finale, where he met Duff McKagan. He talked about growing up and getting into music, the influence of punk in 1977, his drinking decline, the bursting of his pancreas and its after effect, what he learnt about singing from Axl, how he feels the band is stronger these days, and he's an Aquarius. He and Sammy played "Chip Away" to round it off.

Dennis Miller Plus One - Matt Sorum
He was the drummer who replaced Steven Adler, having been spotted whilst playing with The Cult. He's got a new book out soon, Double Talkin' Jive. When GnR split, he and a few of the others spent time in Velvet Revolver, before GnR got back together. The partying was pretty constant, and too promising to skip. He talks of positive experiences with Clive Davis. He saw the famous Beatles appearance on the Ed Sullivan show when he was 5. He turned 60 back in November. He worked on a project with Billy Gibbons lately, hence the latter's Hardware solo album.

The producer of their Appetite For Destruction album, Manny Charlton, has just died, a few weeks short of his 81st birthday. He had been a key part of rock band Nazareth before then, also working as their producer. RIP Sad

Glastonbury '23: Guns N Roses
So they did come, and headlined the Pyramid stage on the Saturday night, and did near enough a 2.5 hour show. Despite criticism about Axl's voice, there was clearly some kind of microphone issue, as his voice rang out clear most of the time. They did 2 encores, and closed on Paradise City (with guest help from Dave Grohl). I noted Yesterdays and Since I Don't Have You weren't included, but this is a small quibble, I wouldn't have expected them to include Live and Let Die after all. Happy Axl makes all the difference.
Besides this, the broadcast rounded up some others from the night, including Christine and the Queens, Rina Sawayama, Lana Del Rey and Mahalia.

Duff recently felt he had to defend the band from the complaint of delivering marathon gigs. But that's hardly something to complain much about, surely?
