Kaiser Chiefs

Post  misery guts on Fri Jul 01, 2016 7:53 am

The Leeds band have released 5 albums already, with a 6th due in the Autumn. They've managed #1 singles and albums, but have suffered a lack of critical attention lately. Singer Ricky Wilson was a judge on the UK version of The Voice in series 3-5, but now seems likely to be devoting his energies to the band. Here are a few of their finest moments:

I Predict A Riot

Oh, My God

Ruby

Little Shocks

Coming Home

Kaiser Chiefs at Benicassim 2013
A short half-hour of performance. Despite undoubted ability, they seem still to be led by their early work, as though their later material doesn't please the crowds quite as much.

Kaiser Chiefs @ Glastonbury 2014
From the John Peel Stage, a nice mix from their 5 albums, with some between-song-pleading about their new album, which I suspect might not have put them back on the map as much as they would have hoped. The songs are still good, though, they ended on 'Oh My God' of course.

World's Greatest Albums: Kaiser Chiefs - Employment
Covering their long gestation and breakthrough success with their 1st album (and a bit of hindsight on their 2nd). Some Leeds DJs added some local colour to the story. It's telling that 2 of the bigger hits from this record endure with audiences even after all these years, and given their relative decline since.

MTV World Stage: Kaiser Chiefs
From Plymouh in Jul 2014, a short set here with a couple from their latest album interspersed with bigger hits.

Kaiser Chiefs - MTV Crashes Coventry
They've a new album coming in October, and lead single Parachute sounds like another winner. But they still seem bound by the need to finish with I Predict a Riot and Oh My God, from back on their 1st album.

The lead track from their new album is:

Parachute

Not to be confused with the Cheryl Cole song of the same name Razz Whether this does much better for them than the last album remains to be seen.

Their headline spot at a radio concert on the beach at Bournemouth last night had to be cancelled when the tidal level turned out to be higher than expected, making the whole event too dangerous to proceed with Shocked

Neil McCormick's Needle Time: Ricky Wilson
From 2014, Ricky both promoted his initial run as judge on the UK version of The Voice, and the new KC album. He related the long story of how his band came together, changed their name from Parva, had a brief run on XL Records, reassessed their goals and came storming through with Employment. The departure of original drummer and leading songwriter Nick was the backdrop to another career reassessment as they worked out their last album. They seem more successful as a live act these days.

Also got a new single:

Hole In My Soul (live)

Kaiser Chiefs - Live @ V Festival 2016
A short but welcome set, opening with Parachute, and closing with Coming Home for a welcome change. Still feel Never Miss A Beat was a mistake.

MTV World Stage: Kaiser Chiefs
From the Ricoh Arena, Coventry, but more obviously pushing new material like Parachute, and breaking Oh My God down into Hole In My Soul for a bit.

Lorraine: Ricky Wilson - 17/11/16
A short chat to plug the new LP, talk about his time as a judge on the UK version of The Voice, and mention a new single (though they played a clip from the Hole In My Soul video).
