Former Wings guitarist and Northern Ireland music legend Henry McCullough dies Crying or Very sad

The 72-year-old was from Portstewart and was one of Paul McCartney’s favourites in the early days of Wings.

GO TO
Born in 1943, he took up the guitar as a boy. He supported Jimi Hendrix and went on to play with some of the biggest names in music, including Joe Cocker and then Paul McCartney & Wings.

He played lead guitar on Wings' James Bond theme Live and Let Die, but he is perhaps best known for his solo on the band's number one hit My Love.

After leaving Wings after just one album he later turned to session work with major stars.

He also played with Marianne Faithfull, Dr Feelgood and Pink Floyd and played the original Peace and Love Festival at Woodstock.

McCullough also sang and wrote music but one of the renowned guitarist's more memorable contributions to music was a few choice words for Pink Floyd.

When playing with Wings at Abbey Road studios in London, members of the Australian band stopped off from their own recording session next door and asked for a few soundbites for their album Dark Side of the Moon.

McCullough's line: "I don't know, I was really drunk at the time," found its way into the closing bars of the famous track Money.

Elsewhere, his lead guitar on stage with Joe Cocker and The Grease Band on day three of Woodstock is the stuff of legend as they put on an electrifying performance of The Beatles' hit With a Little Help from My Friends.

He also toured extensively with his own band.

Over recent years Mr McCullough had suffered ill health.

A concert was organised in Dublin to help raise funds for his ongoing care.

Well-known Irish musicians, many of whom worked alongside McCullough, played Vicar Street for a special Salute To Henry fundraising concert.

Among the artists taking part were Christy Moore, Declan Sinnott, Mick Flannery, John Spillane, Johnny Duhan, Honor Heffernan, The Ed Deane Band and The Kevin Doherty Band. Two bands for whom he played in the past, Sweeney's Men, and Fleadh Cowboys, are also part of the line-up.

The gig was organised by Pete Cummins of Fleadh Cowboys and ex-Pogues manager Frank Murray.

On Tuesday, his agent Nigel Martyn confirmed Mr McCullough's passing.

He said Henry's long-time French partner Josie said he had died that morning.

"She had lost her one true love," he said.

The couple had been living for several years in Ballywindelland, between Coleraine and Ballymoney in Co Antrim, in a home they fondly referred to as "Ballywonderland".

McCullough also played on the music for Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit Jesus Christ Superstar.

He played one of his last live performances in a small rock club in Draperstown, Co Londonderry a year before suffering a heart attack which left him incapacitated.

Mr Martyn added: "He had suffered severe brain damage and was left completely incapacitated for the last four years.

"But Josie has been incredible - the way she looked after him was absolutely out of this world."

Speaking in 2012 of his friend, the impresario Paul Charles said: "Henry has always been a superb musician, in demand and much loved."

"He played on the original Jesus Christ Superstar album before it ever became a hit musical.

”In his heyday he was always delighted to sit in at sessions with McCartney who eventually persuaded him to join Wings. He played lead guitar on their hit My Love."

Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.

Tributes have been made to Mr McCullough on social media.

One half of P.M. Dawn ... singer Attrell Cordes, who was best known as Prince Be ... has died.
Cordes passed away Friday at his NJ home from kidney disease. He was 46.
PM Dawn, which also included Cordes' brother, Jarrett, were huge in the early '90s. They're best known for their #1 hit "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss."
It appears Cordes was also living with diabetes. A post on the group's Facebook page read, "Prince Be Rest In Peace forever more, Pain from Diabetes can't harm you anymore."

A busy round-up here:

Wayne Jackson, Memphis Horns Trumpeter, Dies at 74
Wayne Jackson, a trumpet player who, with the tenor saxophonist Andrew Love, helped define the soul sound of Stax Records and, playing with Mr. Love as the Memphis Horns, provided backup on a long list of classic R&B and pop records, died on Tuesday in Memphis. He was 74.

Harry Rabinowitz, composer and conductor, dies at 100
Rabinowitz conducted the UK's Eurovision Song Contest entries in 1964 and 1966 and was the first conductor of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Cats.

He was Bafta nominated in 1984 for the music he composed for Reilly: Ace of Spies and received the Gold Award from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (Basca) two years later.

Rabinowitz's many conducting credits included several productions from the Merchant Ivory team, among them Maurice, Howards End and The Remains of the Day.

Ralph Stanley, bluegrass patriarch, dies at 89
Although he influenced generations of musicians throughout his long career, Stanley brought his old-time mountain music into a new century when he was featured in the soundtrack for the popular film "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" in 2000, for which he won a Grammy.

Stanley was born and raised in Big Spraddle, Virginia, a land of coal mines and deep forests where he and his brother formed the Stanley Brothers and their Clinch Mountain Boys in 1946. Their father would sing them old traditional songs like "Man of Constant Sorrow," while their mother, a banjo player, taught them the old-time clawhammer style, in which the player's fingers strike downward at the strings in a rhythmic style.
RIP to them all Sad

Tommy Ramone Dies at 65; He Gave Punk Rock Its Pulse

Tom Erdelyi, better known as Tommy Ramone, the founding drummer and last surviving original member of the Ramones, the New York City band whose dizzying, short blasts of melody codified the sound of punk rock, died on Friday at his home in Ridgewood, Queens. He was 65.

The cause was cancer of the bile duct, his family said. Of the original Ramones, Joey (the singer) died in 2001, Dee Dee (the bassist) in 2002 and Johnny (the guitarist) in 2004.

Oh dear, that's sad. Sounds like he wasn't in the best of health anyway Sad RIP

Also Lou Pearlman has died at the age of 62. He created the Backstreet Boys, and also N Sync, but his money-grabbing ways caught up with him in 2008 and he went to jail.

Notably those paying tribute use phrases like "love him or hate him" or "he wasn't the best businessman" which is a stretch of politeness.

Tom Searle, guitarist with the Architects, has died at the age of just 28.
A post by his twin brother Dan on the band's Facebook page said Tom had been living with cancer for three years.

"In the last two weeks it suddenly took a turn for the worse and finally he left us," he wrote.

"He spent the last two months fighting with everything he had to overcome the disease and things appeared to be moving in the right direction."
Also, Belgian jazz musician Toots Thielemans, has died at the ripe old age of 94.
He was widely regarded as one of the world's top harmonica players and was well known for appearing on the Sesame Street and Midnight Cowboy themes.

The musician's real name was Jean-Baptiste Thielemans but he was known affectionately as Toots.

Headley Bennett, sax player, has died at the age of 85
A graduate of the famed Alpha Boys School in Jamaica's capital of Kingston, Bennett was a contemporary of saxophonist Tommy McCook and trombonist Don Drummond, both reggae pioneers.

He was a session musician at producer Leslie Kong's Beverley's Records in 1962 when 16-year-old Robert Nesta Marley recorded "Judge Not," a ska song. That year, Bennett also played on "Hurricane Hattie," the first hit song by 14-year-old James Chambers, later known as Jimmy Cliff. It was also produced by Kong.

Force MD’s Member Trisco Pearson Has Passed Away

1980s and 1990s group Force M.D.’s (f/k/a Force M.C.’s) were at the frontier of bridging Hip-Hop with R&B and New Jack Swing. The popular New York City outfit which has included a number of members since its 1981 Rap inception would find greater success with hits such as 1985’s “Tender Love” and 1987’s “Love Is A House,” both released on Tommy Boy/Warner Bros. Records.

The music community has learned that one of the M.D.’s, Trisco Pearson has passed away. The Staten Island, New York MC/singer was battling Stage 4 cancer before he died yesterday (September 16).

Well, in reverse order, Pete Burns was I'm afraid a case waiting to happen really. In recent years, his constant plastic surgery escapades have simply spoken of a deeply troubled person, who perhaps now will be at peace. But he does leave us with some great classics from Dead Or Alive, obviously You Spin Me Round, but I was always fond of In Too Deep as well.

As for Bobby Vee, one of the voices I remember from listening to local oldies radio 25 or so years ago when I was beginning to really get into music. Whilst Rubber Ball and Take Good Care of My Baby are rightly counted as amongst his top hits, for me nothing can touch The Night Has A Thousand Eyes, a timeless tale delivered by that great voice.

RIP to them both Sad Sad
