Tom Jones!
The Welsh wonder has been scoring hits for half a century, had big success in the USA as well as in the UK. He's got an autobiography out very soon, too. Having kept dyeing his hair through his 50s, he has finally in recent years preferred the natural grey look, as befits a change of his sound. He has also been a judge on the UK version of The Voice for the past 4 years. Here are a few of his highlights:
It's Not Unusual
Help Yourself
Kiss (w/Art of Noise)
If I Only Knew
What Good Am I?

Re: Tom Jones!
As well as the book, he's got a new album 'Long Lost Suitcase' imminent for release too.
Imagine: Tom Jones - What Good Am I?
From 2010, an hourlong retrospective which was heavy on his early years and success (Sandie Shaw generously forsaking the chance to sing 'It's Not Unusual' because she knew a) he did it better, and b) it would make his name), followed by his mid-80's effort to move with the times, the high watermark of his 1998 LP Reload, and his latest revamp to show his age. A lot of respect shown, and he seems good for a long while yet.
Tom Jones at the BBC
In connection with the Imagine repeat came this compilation of assorted performances over the years, and a blend of familiar and unfamiliar hits.

BBC Four Sessions: Tom Jones
Also from 2012, a concert from the LSO St Luke's in London, with Josh Osho and Seasick Steve along as guests, and a heavy emphasis on his two recent 'Johnny Cash'-esque albums. Good choice of material.
His book "Over the Top and Back" is out next Thursday, and he's busy promoting it:

Tom Jones & Rob Brydon - One Big Night for Children In Need
Mainly a concert from Tom, sometimes in duets with James Morrison and Laura Mvula, or backed by the Chicken Shed Theatre Company. Else, doing skits with Brydon, and introducing clips to encourage donations to CiN. He even sang with Brydon. A good show, a good cause.

Sad news, as his wife Linda has died from cancer. They were married for 59 years apparently. He cancelled some gigs last week citing a major personal emergency, clearly so he could be with her. RIP

Re: Tom Jones!
Tom Jones' 1950s - The Decade That Made Me
A curious effort that mixed Tom revisiting old haunts in Pontypridd and Treforest from his youth, and considered social comment from the likes of Joan Bakewell and Francis Beckett, as though two competing documentaries were co-existing. Topics covered included the importance of films, music and telly. Also the tendency of some young folk (like Tom) to be seduced by the allure of America. As he managed to spend 2 years convalescing from tuberculosis, and get married and start a family during the decade, it was understandable why Tom felt its importance.

The Les Reed Story
This was quite a fun career chat with "50 years in the business" Les, who started out with piano lessons at the age of 5, in Woking. Later formed his own jazz band and played around clubs. He learned the clarinet too. He joined the John Barry Seven, leaving in 1962. He worked with Adam Faith and Joe Brown, was musical director on Ready Steady Go and for the Dave Clark Five. He worked with Barry Mason, and wrote for many acts, their breakthrough being "It's Not Unusual" for Tom Jones. He also did Delilah for the Welsh wonder. As well as writing, he was also busy arranging and conducting. He and Barry would tailor their songs to fit the chosen artists, whether Elvis Presley or Sammy Davis Jnr. He wrote a few musicals, but got annoyed about critics. He was awarded the OBE in 1998, and had many other awards. He was a great believer in spiritual connections, and attraction. He scorned the lethargy of acts taking so long to make albums, as the norm when he started was to manage it in a matter of days. Agreed there was a lot of modern talent about, citing Elbow's "One Day Like This" as a good example. Overall, a chatty bloke.

Re: Tom Jones!
He returns as a judge on The Voice UK tomorrow night as it begins its new post-BBC run, alongside the interminable Will I am and new judges Jennifer Hudson and Gavin Rossdale.
And he's giving the BBC both barrels about it.

Re: Tom Jones!
Perhaps inevitably the treadmill of PR wobbled a bit. Sir Tom suggested that Series 1 winner Leanne Mitchell blew her opportunity by gaining weight instead of losing it, showing what he called a lack of drive. This caused some groups to get the hump and insist that he be sacked for insensitivity. Not that he will, and it's more publicity for the show.

Re: Tom Jones!
He's often proudly related the story of his only meeting with Elvis Presley. So maybe this news story is not that surprising:
Tom Jones dating Priscilla Presley
Tom Jones dating Priscilla Presley
Interesting that there's only 5 or so years between them, too, so it's hardly an old man recapturing his youth with some young tart.A source said: "Tom has had a tough year following the death of Linda, but he has enjoyed Priscilla's company.
"They have been seen out in Hollywood and although it is early days they are taking each one as it comes."

Tom wasn't at Glastonbury, as far as I could tell, but he's lined up to make his debut at the Proms instead:

September 1st is the big day for Sir Tom.Sir Tom Jones is to make his Proms debut on the Royal Albert Hall stage singing soul to celebrate Stax Records with two surviving artists from the label, Booker T Jones and Sam Moore.
The Stax event is one of nine Late Night Proms offering audiences alternative music to the core classical repertoire. They include the songs of Scott Walker and the first complete live performance of Philip Glass and Ravi Shankar’s concept album, Passages.

Oh dear. The 77-year-old, famous for hits like Delilah, It's Not Unusual and Sex Bomb, was due to start with a concert in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday.
In a statement on his website, Sir Tom sent his "sincere apologies" to fans for cancelling the dates, which will be re-arranged for 2018.

BBC Proms '17: Stax with Jools Holland
Holland MC'd as Booker T Jones, Steve Cropper, Eddie Floyd and Sam Moore mixed with Tom Jones, James Morrison, Beverley Knight and Nadia Rose through a catalogue of the greatest hits from Stax Records. There were mostly fitting efforts, though the closing version of Sweet Soul Music bumbled a bit when Tom sang someone else's line, perhaps thinking they weren't going to. Otherwise class stuff.

Top Gear: Sir Tom Jones
This 2008 edition was to push his then-album, 24 Hours, which Tom co-wrote many of the tracks on with famous collaborators like U2. His first car was a Jaguar, which he promptly crashed, and he was later banned for driving without a proper licence. He hadn't driven a manual car since the 1960s, but he managed a lap time of 1m52.2s.

Re: Tom Jones!
Sir Tom's publicity gene appears to be in overdrive, he got his $0.02 in over the recent developing Weinstein scandal by confidently telling a reporter that such reprehensible behaviour is also a part of the music industry. Given that the UK already had a look into this murky world with the Jimmy Saville debacle a few years back, it's hardly a shock revelation.

Tom Jones & Beverley Knight's Gospel Christmas
From the Coal Exchange, Cardiff, an hour or so of seasonal tunes, many of which were off the usual radar, with Tom and Bev singing some, and guests Jessie Ware and Kwabs singing some others, including skits where Tom visited his old chapel, and the question of immigration in Cardiff was looked at.

Lorraine - Sir Tom Jones
From last Friday, a lengthy chat to push the returning new series of The Voice UK. Tom likes to find and work with new talent, and an act he worked with last time, Into The Ark, were invited on part of his UK tour last year. He'll be doing more dates when this series finishes. His new hip feels fine. He's moved back to the UK, partly because his US home had associations with his late wife. His son remains his manager.

Re: Tom Jones!
Got a copy at last. It's pretty good, actually, perhaps more depth on the earlier years, but that may be understandable. His 70s decline goes quickly, and he swears quite a lot too. The book ends with a chapter on his wife, and makes no mention of his love child. He enjoys his renaissance that began when his son replaced the late Gordon Mills as his manager, but makes clear that while other artists under Mills' management were disgruntled enough to leave, he always felt indebted for getting his big chance in the first place.misery guts wrote:His book "Over the Top and Back" is out next Thursday,

The South Bank Show Originals: Tom Jones
Based on a 2000 profile, when Tom was hot off the back of his career boom LP Reload. He talked about growing up Welsh, and how it formed his values. Being married at 16 developed strength and responsibility. Had great respect for Elvis Presley, and was swayed to work in Las Vegas because of the links to Presley and Sinatra.

Happy Hour with Olly Murs
Christmas celebration show, thinly masquerading as a plug for the forthcoming new UK series of The Voice, on which Olly will be a judge. He did a duet with fellow judge Jennifer Hudson, and host Emma Willis was also there. Other judge Sir Tom Jones also rocked up to contest a darts match with Olly, and to sing It's Not Unusual. Olly did several of his own songs throughout the show too. Indeed the only absentee was judge Will.i.am, but then he had his own tribute on the Black Eyed Peas elsewhere.
