Multi-millionaire drummer-turned-singer Phil Collins has confirmed he intends to retire in order to spend time with his children. The 60 year old has been suffering from deafness and other ailments in recent years, so it makes more sense for him to stop for the good of his health also. His last album, Going Back, consisted of covers of his favourite soul songs from his youth.

Though much derided by music critics, chiefly for the sin of success, he has contributed some great pop songs over the years:

Easy Lover
I Wish It Would Rain Down
In The Air Tonight
Against All Odds
Two Hearts

and others. I've got most of his solo albums, I'm something of a fan.

Don't blame him and he's brought some wonderful memories into our lives. For me, he could put out a hit or a flop. I feel he did his best in the 80's, especially with Genesis. Then I am an 80's child, so who am I to judge? My top five favs from Phil would go in this direction..... (1 being best)

1) --- I Dont Care Anymore
2) --- You Can't Hurry Love
3) --- Easy Lover
4) --- That's All (Genesis)
5) --- Land Of Confusion (Genesis)

Apparently, Phil is now talking about some sort of comeback in 2014, although quite whether anything will come of it given his health questions, we'll have to see. In the meantime, here's some reviews of his work:

Phil Collins: Going Back
His most recent album saw the former Genesis frontman covering a whole load of tunes from his youth, music (often Motown) that he listened to. And this was a 1.5 hour concert from New York (where else?) with Phil and a large band belting 'em out. I'm not totally sold on this project, but it was a good show.

Phil Collins: Live in Paris
I seem to think I've seen this before, but it's still good. From 1997, and thus leaning on his recent 'Dance into the Light' album, and rejoicing in a circular stage, Collins gets through an hour with a mix of old & new. He ended on 'Sussudio', oddly.

Classic Albums: Face Value
Don't usually mention these because there are so many, but FV is one of those I can happily re-watch and enjoy. I don't wholly buy Phil's suggestion that the idea of it being all about his break-up is a myth, but there are some great songs there, and it set out the stall for his future career quite well.

Discovering: Phil Collins
UK critics love to hate him, in the main. It's easy to see that No Jacket Required built well on the foundation of Face Value, and that after the peak of But Seriously... he was never going to return to those sorts of heights. I can't say I blame him for pursuing an American sound and market - 7 US #1 singles against 3 UK #1's tells its own story. And his hip-hop admirers have their origins in his use of black horn sections even on FV.

Phil Collins broke into his self-imposed retirement, for a good cause:

Phil Collins performs at school concert
The singer and drummer sang two songs with the middle school band at the Miami Country Day School, according to the Miami Herald.

He praised the school's musicians but admitted he was nervous about singing.

Collins announced his retirement in 2011, saying he wanted to spend more time with his young children.

At the time he said: "I am stopping so I can be a full time father to my two young sons on a daily basis."

His former wife, Orianne Collins Mejjati, told the Miami Herald that Collins had agreed to the school performance after being asked by their children.

He performed renditions of In the Air Tonight and Land of Confusion.

Phil Collins - No Ticket Required
From the Reunion Theatre, Dallas, in 1985, as he reaps the benefits of American success. He mixes the big hits with lesser material, and spends a long time in the middle introducing the members of his band and entourage. He seemed more assured than appears to have been the case with some of his previous solo tours. Good show, though.

He's back together with one of his ex-wives, and philosophical about a failed collaboration with Adele:

Phil grateful Adele didn't slay him in the press

But the collaboration might yet happen, though more when she wants it than when he does.

He's got his autobiography coming in October:
In his memoir Phil talks honestly about his three failed marriages, his alcoholism and his ill health but also describes the highs and lows of his career, and what it is like to work with other rock legends from Eric Clapton to Robert Plant.

Published to coincide with the release of a singles collection, Not Dead Yet will thrill fans and change minds.

More details today of his "return from retirement" plans:

Phil Collins marks comeback with European tour
Rock veteran Phil Collins is coming out of retirement after 10 years with dates in London, Paris and Cologne.
The star, whose hits include In The Air Tonight and Against All Odds, will play a five-night residency at London's Royal Albert Hall next June.
That will be followed by two dates in Paris and two in Cologne.
He'll only be singing, drumming is something he's remaining retired from.

Phil Collins Announces 2017 Comeback Concerts

There'll be no early retirement for star singer Phil Collins.

The 65-year-old former Genesis frontman Monday (Oct. 17) announced plans for gigs next summer in London, Paris and Cologne. The tour will be called: Not Dead Yet, Live.

He officially retired in 2002, but that didn't last. He last toured in 2007.

Collins told reporters in London he initially retired to spend more time with his family but started to drink after his family split up.

"I've changed my mind," he said of leaving the stage for good. "I'm living with my young kids. They want me to go out on the road and do my thing, and why not?"

Collins says he's not likely to play drums on tour but might try performing the introduction to "In the Air Tonight."

One significant other is not happy with his autobiography:

Phil Collins sued by ex-wife
The Against All Odds singer married his first wife Andrea Bertorelli in 1975 and the marriage lasted for five years.
The couple had a son, Simon, and Collins adopted Bertorelli's daughter Joely.
In his latest autobiography Not Dead Yet, the 65-year old singer details his career at Genesis, his rise to fame as a solo artist as well as his personal life.
This included accounts of his marriages and divorces.
Oh dear Idea

Not Dead Yet, by Phil Collins
A lengthy and impressive read. More self-aware than some, and searingly honest at times, too. He tries to settle some scores, set a few facts straight, and explain how his health really is worse than it seems. His alcoholism was something unfamiliar from his usual story.

He's had to cancel some gigs at the Royal Albert Hall after a nasty fall which caused a gash near his eye. His "drop foot" issue got the better of him, unfortunately Shocked Get well soon.

Phil Collins - Going Back to Detroit
A look at the 2010 album which allowed him to create the magic of Motown, often with the same musicians as originally used, such as the Funk Brothers (or 3 of them anyway). There was also a sideline to the film telling the rise and fall of Motown, as well as in-studio work from Phil & co, and then the above concert. Might just have to give the record a spin again now.

Buster
Phil's late 80s film turn as train robber Buster Edwards.  In a wide Brit-heavy cast including Julie Walters, Sheila Hancock, Larry Lamb and others, he covered A Groovy Kind of Love and got a #1 hit in the UK, and Two Hearts made #2. The Four Tops also scored their biggest success in years with Loco In Acapulco too.

Phil Collins at the BBC
Several performances, the infamous "paint pot" turn which started a rumour, and then a running joke. Interestingly, a rare and possibly unseen special do of "Wear My Hat", shelved when the single didn't make the top 40 after all. It's fun to see the number of keyboard works he does when he's more famous as a drummer.

Video Killed the Radio Star: Phil Collins
Again, surprising that it took so long to reach him. His "everyman" persona was cheerfully mocked, his acting antics in videos like Two Hearts (and I Missed Again) came up, the sepia change of style for Another Day In Paradise had some consideration, the globe-trotting of Take Me Home, and the larks of the little-seen Don't Lose My Number. He at least seemed to see videos as an excuse for some fun, rather than a chore to be endured.

Mark Lawson Talks To... Phil Collins
He talked back in 2008, at which time he was 57 and had pretty much accepted that he wouldn't make another album or do big tours. Well, times changed. He tries to set several records straight, from the "divorce by fax" story to the infamous TOTP turn accompanied by a paint pot. He fell into acting, and his kids were growing up in Switzerland which he compared with his own upbringing near the Thames. He went to Chiswick County Grammar School, and almost got in a crowd scene for A Hard Day's Night. He felt Peter Gabriel's costumes were distracting, rather than detracting, from Genesis' music. He never planned to be a lead singer, or to go solo. He was rueful about Live Aid, though he met Cher on Concorde. He uses his own notation rather than more conventional music charts. He was also a late adopter to using computers, but his Disney work forced his hand. His partial deafness came from a viral infection.
