Irish rock legends with a 35+ year track record behind them, global success story, some of the biggest-selling & critically acclaimed albums of all time, a fierce political voice & force, but a bit quiet in recent years. Still, here's a few of their best:

New Year's Day

U2: From The Sky Down
A 90 min documentary about the making of their 1991 album 'Achtung Baby', which proved a pivotal transition from their 80's pomp to the next stage of their musical development. The influences of Berlin just after reunification seem to have been as inspirational as they were for David Bowie in the 1970's.

U2: Live at Glastonbury (2011)
Following on from the above, their appearance this summer was their 1st at the famous venue. They've plenty of good singalong numbers, and it was easy to enjoy.

U2 - 360' - Live From The Rose Bowl
Decent & recent hour-long concert from somewhere in America. A fair mix of old and new material.

It Might Get Loud
Slightly muddled 2009 film with Jack White, Jimmy Page and The Edge, in individual films about what the guitar means to them, and also a jam/chitchat between all three in some studio, which never really becomes profound. They're intriguing guys, but somehow comparing Led Zeppelin, U2 and The White Stripes seems a ludicrous concept to me.

To surprise, they've brought out their first new album for 5 years: 'Songs of Innocence', which is available for "free" (i.e. not really) in connection with the latest new scam, er scheme, from Apple Rolling Eyes

^^^There followed a backlash from users who didn't want a free album they didn't want, prompting a hasty fix.

The U2 Phenomenon 1980-2000
Mary Anne Hobbs presented again, with various usual suspects like Pip Williams and Les Davidson willingly talking of their early years, slow rise through successful 80s albums, changing directions in the 90s, and evolution beyond that. Bono and the Edge continue to suck up the bulk of the attention.

Rock Milestones - U2 : War

Mick Wall, Kris Needs and Hugh Fielder were among the different kettle of fish discussing this pivotal moment from the Irish rockers' career, as they cemented early efforts, and pointed the way to future bigger successes. Wall made clear that despite their post-punk origins, they were both a compelling live act, and not disparaging towards an American destiny, something which has proved patently important to their continuing survival and success ever since. And it doesn't hurt to listen to tracks like 'New Year's Day' and 'Sunday, Bloody Sunday' again.

Classic Albums: The Joshua Tree (U2)
All 4 members have something to say about their master-work, whilst Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois and Steve Lillywhite are also all present & correct. Even Anton Corbijn explains the magic of the solo Joshua tree they found. The song "Mothers of the Dispossessed" seems a clear antecedent of Coldplay's "Viva La Vida", too.

U2 took the opportunity of doing a gig in Paris to make a peaceful gesture for the benefit of Eagles of Death Metal:

Eagles of Death Metal join U2 onstage in Paris in emotional return
EAGLES Of Death Metal proclaimed “Paris we love you” as they performed in the French capital alongside U2, less than a month after their last concert was cut short by a terrorist attack in which 89 people died.

The California rockers were invited to the stage for an emotional encore by the Irish band during their second night of rescheduled gigs in Paris.

Bono called them brothers before giving them the floor in a packed and bouncing AccorHotels Arena, just weeks after the terror attacks in which a total of 130 people were killed.

“They were robbed of their stage three weeks ago - we would like to offer them ours tonight,” he said.

U2 - Innocence + Experience Tour 2015 ...a return to Paris
The above gig was a good 2 hours+ and featured hits old and new, and worked quite impressively. As they've sung about Irish terrorism before, then they were already armed & ready for the circumstance. Bono summed up the night with "We are all Parisians tonight". As noted, Eagles of Death Metal were brought on to close the show with a worked duet, and then left alone to close the show one of their own. An emotional experience, and a showcase of why U2 remain so successful after all these years.

A Rock Crusade - An unauthorised story on U2
Since they started in 1976, I guess 40th anniversary will be the watchword for them this year. This piece related their story with the slant towards their campaigns, especially Bono's many encounters with the great and the good, whether handing out his trademark specs to world leaders, putting together concert films for the benefit of those who can't get to gigs, making poverty history, representing "the face of fusion philanthropy", backing the Red charity, or the Eden fashion label. Always well briefed before speechifying, Bono is clearly a sharper operator than even his critics lambast.

Bono: In The Name Of Love, by Mick Wall
Rock journo churns out this 2006 biography of the U2 frontman, his homelife, his career journey, his social activism, his occasional blips... nothing you probably didn't already know, or could guess, or were interested to know. But a good read, all the same.

Video Killed The Radio Star: U2
The Edge and Bono chew the fat with Kevin Godley about his early 90s work with them. A couple of their early 80s vids were briefly discussed in comparison, but Even Better Than The Real Thing, Numb and The Sweetest Thing are interesting enough in their own right to merit discussion. Bono also mentioned the troubles trying to shoot a video with Frank Sinatra.

Killing Bono, by Neil McCormick
Irish rock critic who was at school with Bono, and who witnessed the early gigs and career of U2, whilst trying himself to make it big in the same business, which a dis-spiriting lack of success. Despite having the singing, the song-writing, the gigs and the band problems all cracked, they always fail to catch a break, whether a lack of record company interest, competing politics over who to sign, or distribution companies going bust, or executives getting fired within days of giving the Thumbs Up. It's a warmly written account of how hard it can be to make it in the business, with also plenty of material about U2. Apparently, the book was made into a film, too. At least the guy seems happier as a rock critic (and Needle Time presenter, clearly).

U2 have said they'll be doing a tour this year to mark the 30th anniversary of their "The Joshua Tree" album:

Twenty five dates through the summer
In an interview with Rolling Stone, U2 guitarist The Edge said the band had not yet decided how to structure the concerts.
"The show might not necessarily start with track one, side one - Where the Streets Have No Name - because we feel like maybe we need to build up to that moment," he said.
"So we're still in the middle of figuring out exactly how the running order will go."
Alongside the hits, fans will be looking forward to hearing some rarely-performed album tracks, including Trip Through Your Wires and In God's Country.
I'm quite amused by this since I only got round to getting the album a couple of months back Laughing

Discovering: U2
The ongoing series reaches the Irish rock legends, whose near-40-year career nevertheless fitted into a half-hour. They started well, but really started to make waves with their 3rd and 4th albums. Brian Eno and Steve Lilywhite were useful producers, and Daniel Lanois helped too. Experiments in the 1990s weren't seen as successful, so now they're back on safer ground as themselves.

I seem to have unaccountably omitted the release of their new album, "Songs of Experience", a match to their previous "Songs of Innocence" effort. There were a couple of singles:

Get Out Of Your Own Way (live)

U2 at the BBC
Shot at Abbey Road, the band played several songs from across their career (including Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out of, referencing the 20th anniversary of the death of Michael Hutchence), and some of the new album. There was also a short skit done in Sao Paulo, on their most recent tour, where they were soon mobbed. They told anecdotes about touring, about their very early days, the renaming, reaching their 40th anniversary, how their last album backfired due to it being an Apple freebie, and so on.

Hansa Studios - By The Wall 1976-90
One of the world's greatest studios, inconveniently (at the time) situated in Berlin. David Bowie, Tony Visconti and Iggy Pop put it on the map with a run of albums made there, which led Depeche Mode and Nick Cave to follow, and then Marillion and ultimately U2 also hit big with albums they did there. U2's Achtung Baby was the last big album done after the wall came down and Germany reunified. But the studios reopened for rock in 2007 with Supergrass, and R.E.M. also made use of the place with their last album.

Ellen: Bono & the Edge
Half the band rocked up to play a couple of acoustic numbers, Vertigo and Love Is Bigger Than Anything In Its Way (from the latest album), and chatted about it being their first time on the show, how they name-checked the host in their shows, how Ellen saw them on a gig on a riverboat at New Orleans in their really early days, how the band saved Bono's life, how he met the guys in the band, and his future wife in the same week, how Edge's mother was their first roadie, and how Bono's son is now in his own band called Inhaler.

Bono had a big problem on Saturday night in Berlin when he had to cancel the gig part-way through after losing his voice. Apologies and rearrangements were in order. But he already claims to be on the mend, so that panic didn't last long.

Bono on Bono: Conversations with Michka Assayas
From 2004-5, a French journalist talks to the U2 frontman several times over a year or two, telling tales of his past and present, as he geared up for the How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb album. They range far and wide, taking in political pressurising, musical journeys and home life. A good read.

SLF - U2 - Belfast
A combined gig (or gigs) from 1981, presented in very much an across-the-divides ABABAB type way. Stiff Little Fingers were obviously much appreciated and did Alternative Ulster and Suspect Device, whilst the then fledgling U2 gave us The Ocean, Electrico and Out of Control, among others.

Off Camera with Sam Jones: The Edge
Surprised I missed this one last time round it was on. From around 2013, the photographer chatted about various angles. The time Edge spends on his "sound", the makings of "Bad" and "One", the oblique strategies of Brian Eno, what they gained from the punk rock era, how they got signed after a disastrous London showcase was followed by a more successful Dublin homecoming, having an open attitude to touring & breaking the USA, the filming of an early gig at Red Rocks, being proud to be uncool, and how their unity stopped them drying up.

eXPERIENCE - Live In Berlin
The Mercedes Benz Arena, no less, on the last night of their tour. Bono did some silly skits with the image of his face, so he could revive MacPhisto, but largely stuck to songs from their most recent album, together with familiar classics like Vertigo, One and New Year's Day. Berlin was a city with a history for them, which fed into the whole atmosphere too.

TOTP2 - St Patrick's Day Special
Sure I must have seen this before, but couldn't find any sign. A compilation of the Corrs, Boomtown Rats, Cranberries, Stiff Little Fingers and even Van Morrison, but it mostly included 4 showings from U2, from Fire and New Year's Day, through to One and Stuck In A Moment. One was the most notable, from a time when the show was obsessed with satellite OB performances, such as this one from some stadium before a gig.
