Here's an unfortunate coincidence for the recent resurgence of Daft Punk:

Daft Punk 'One More Time' singer and house producer Romanthony dies, aged just 46

Ray Manzarek, keyboard player & founding member of The Doors, has died at the age of 74 after a long battle with bile duct cancer Sad Having caught a lot of docs on the band in the last year or two, I always took the impression that the guy was as multi-talented as he was nice. 74's a good age.

Bass player Trevor Bolder has died, aged 62.

Bolder joined David Bowie's backing band in 1971, appearing on classic albums including Hunky Dory and Aladdin Sane. He went on to join Uriah Heep five years later and only stopped playing with the band a few months ago, due to his poor health.

Slim Whitman has died at the age of 90 (or possibly 89). Either way, his yodel sound made him a star, and he scored one of the biggest UK #1 hits of the 1950s', 11 consecutive weeks with 'Rose Marie' (still 3rd longest ever consecutive run for a UK #1) Sad I've got a couple of albums, he was a decent singer. Alan Myers, drummer with Devo, has died at the age of 58, after a long battle with cancer.

Devo are maybe best remembered for songs like 'Whip It' and their album 'Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!'

'Glee' star Cory Monteith found dead in hotel in Canada I must admit that am completely ignorant to Glee as I've never watched a single show or took to any of their music. Still, 31 is very young and very sad news for Glee fans. RIP

A quirkier one than usual here:

Mel Smith, 60, has died after a long spell of illness. He reached #3 in the UK pop charts at Christmas 1987 in duet with Kim Wilde on a cover of 'Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree'. He also sang many numbers on his breakthrough BBC sketch show 'Not! the 9 o'clock News'.

Musician JJ Cale has died of a heart attack at the age of 74. Despite a fulfilled career, he will be best remembered for other performer's versions of his songs, most notably Eric Clapton's version of 'Cocaine', and 'After Midnight'. Cale featured on Clapton's recent 'Old Sock' album.

Yes, it's the sort of age you'd expect, but still a sad day for remembering the timeless tunes he gave us. And then there's this:

Joan Jett & the Blackhearts Drummer Lee Crystal Dies  Very sad to hear, especially as they were my very first concert. R.I.P.  Sad

Lee Crystal, who played drums for Joan Jett & the Blackhearts during their most commercially successful period in the ’80s, has died. He passed away from complications from multiple sclerosis, which he was diagnosed with in 1993.

According to a post on Kayos Productions’ Facebook page, Crystal just “lost his valiant fight with MS.”

Crystal was the Blackhearts’ drummer from 1981-86, playing on the band’s most popular recordings, including the LPs ‘I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll’ and ‘Album.’ Together, the Top 20 records yielded Jett’s hit single covers of Sly & the Family Stone’s ‘Everyday People,’ Tommy James and the Shondells’ ‘Crimson and Clover’ and ‘I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll,’ which reached No. 1.

In an interview with Modern Drummer from 2006, the Brooklyn-bred Crystal said that “Joan Jett was what I needed. I wanted to play real rock ’n’ roll.” Before he signed on to be Jett’s drummer, Crystal played with former New York Dolls guitarist Sylvain Sylvain. After splitting from the Blackhearts, he played with Crash Conference and Secret Chiefs.

After his multiple sclerosis made it difficult to play drums, Crystal became a music teacher out of his New Jersey home, where he instructed drum students to “get real familiar with your drums, because you’ll be hitting them.”

UK jazz pioneer Stan Tracey has died at the age of 86, after a long battle with cancer.
Tracey began his musical career as an accordion player during the Second World War, switching to the piano and joining the Ted Heath Band at the end of the War. He then took up residence as the in-house pianist at London's iconic Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club for six years between 1959 and 1965. He went on to produce the acclaimed Jazz Suite Inspired By Dylan Thomas' 'Under Milk Wood' album in 1965, the pinnacle of what was his most creative and successful decade as a musician.

In the 1970's he developed a more avant-garde playing style and moved into more freeform styles of jazz. He eventually set up the (now-defunct) record label Steam and fronted a number of touring bands, continuing to tour actively until his death. He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2008 New Year Honours list, having already been made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).
