Rest in Peace

Post  misery guts on Sat Sep 18, 2010 1:24 am

NB This will be a single general thread for all and sundry, save exceptional cases (eg Michael Jackson)

Arrow flies no more
Soca musician Alphonsus "Arrow" Cassell, best known for his dancefloor anthem Hot Hot Hot, has died at the age of 60.

He died of complications from brain cancer at his home on the Caribbean island of Montserrat, his brother said.
It might not have been a big chart hit, but it'll be a timeless party anthem forevermore.

On September 8, 2010 we lost boy-band lead singer of LFO, Rich Cronin to leukemia. He was 36 years old. They were most noted for their hit Summer Girls in 1999. They also scored the Top 10 with Girls On TV .

Yes, unfortunately his marriages seem to have out-shone his actual career. At least he's remembered in his own right and not just as "Carrie Fisher's dad" Suspect

Soul singer Solomon Burke has died at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, officials have said. He was 70.
Burke, who wrote the hit Everybody Needs Somebody to Love among many others, was both a Grammy winner and a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
RIP Sad

Should maybe also mention Sir Norman Wisdom, who died earlier this week, aged 95, and who had some minor hits in the 1950's, sang often in his comedy films, and in theatre shows such as 'Walking Happy'.

RIP Sad

Billy Taylor has died of heart failure, aged 89. His most famous song, I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free, became the unofficial anthem of the US civil rights movement. They'll be playing that one for centuries.

RIP

Also, Bobby Farrell, the dancer in Boney M, has died suddenly at the age of 61. Although it was claimed (not least by him) that he sang the male vocals on their hits, in fact producer Frank Farian did it, and Bobby just danced.

RIP

Very sad on all named; especially Teena Marie for me. Lovergirl was fantastic for its' day. Many forget she also hit the Top 40 in 1981 with I Need Your Lovin' ... didn't make it past #37, but all the same. It was a good song and quite sad she's gone. That just came out of no where too. I was listening to that song a few weeks ago without a thought in the world. Like Laura Branigan, that one really was a stab to learn.

You know, a friend once told me (sometime in the time frame of George Harrison's death) that singers / band members always go in threes. I wonder if there's something to that?

Yes, I saw he was quite ill a few weeks back, but it's still a shame. Baker Street will of course outlive us all, but Get It Right Next Time was also worthy of mention Sad

Jet Harris, who was bass guitarist in The Shadows, has died, aged 71 Sad

After leaving The Shadows, he scored a #1 hit with fellow ex-Shadow Tony Meehan. Indeed, 1962-3 were his peak years (so this feels quite poignant as I've been covering those years in the past few months).
