For some, the greatest singer-songwriter of his, or any, generation. An influence for decades, he still remains a musical force to be reckoned with, just this week scoring his 8th career LP #1 in the UK, and delivering a diatribe to his critics whilst receiving a career tribute in the US. Here are a few of his many highlights:

Like A Rolling Stone (live)

Blowin' In The Wind (live)

All Along The Watchtower (live)

Tangled Up In Blue

Things Have Changed

Forever Young: A Tribute to Bob Dylan
The Celtic Connections festival saw various performers covering Dylan songs from the obvious to the obscure. A pleasant view & listen.

Bob Dylan: The Folk Years
The story of the evolution of his sound over his 1st 4 albums, from a quiet start to a world-changing success and then appearing to shun the folk world which he claimed never to have been wedded to. The evidence remains impressive.

Dylan's stint at #1 ended very quickly...

Rock Milestones: Bob Dylan - Change On The Tracks
An entertaining assessment of Dylan's entire album output up to this 1975 highlight, from authors, biographers and other journalists. Apparently not only is this his best album, but "Tangled Up In Blue" is considered his best song by Dylan fans. Which is nice. The quote which summed this adulation up best was "There is Dylan, then there is everybody else." Razz

Bob Dylan - Phenomenon
A familiar story, from this early start, prolific creativity, hiatus or two, and defiant plodding on. He continues to impress his fans, and so on.

The Roots of Bob Dylan - Down The Tracks
Plenty of worth contributors here, not least Pete Seeger, and even archive footage of Leadbelly. Mike Marqusee cropped up here and in the above, reminding me of the director Richard Lester. Many names were name-checked as influences, almost as many as who might claim Dylan influenced them.

...Sings Dylan II - Bob Covers From The BBC Archive
A mix of the obvious (Joan Baez) to many oddities from Randy Crawford to KT Tunstall. The hour-long compilation ended with Bob Dylan, crazily enough.

...Sings Dylan - Bob Covers From The BBC Archive
Thankfully repeated to justify the above, this was put together back in 2005, and only ran 40 minutes. The Byrds and Bryan Ferry featured, with more left-field choices coming from Lulu (a near identical routine to "Mr Tambourine Man" as in the above), and a lengthy one from XTC.

Bob Dylan - Masterpieces Volume 1
An hour-long compilation of Bob performing various of his many hits, from Gotta Serve Somebody to Mr Tambourine Man, All Along The Watchtower to Rainy Day Women #12 & #35 (possibly my favourite).

Bob Dylan - Masterpieces Volume 2
Much as above, but obviously with different songs, from Jokerman to Maggie's Farm, Knockin' On Heaven's Door to a somewhat all-star version of "My Back Pages", from a gig with such other luminaries as Tom Petty and George Harrison (quite probably connected to the Travelling Wilburys project of the late 1980's).

The Best of Bob Dylan
An enjoyable hour compilation from across the years, with a lively version of "Hurricane" and ending with the joyous "Rainy Day Women #12 & #35" cheers

Just released his new album last Friday, and turned 75 years old on Tuesday:

Fallen Angels

It's another bash at the Great American Songbook.

Bit of history making today as he has become the first musician to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. The Nobel Prizes are annual awards in various fields (chemistry, economics, peace, etc) and globally regarded as pretty damn prestigious.
The academy's permanent secretary, Sara Danius, said that while Dylan performs his poetry in the form of songs, that's no different from the ancient Greeks, whose works were often performed to music.
"Bob Dylan writes poetry for the ear," she said. "But it's perfectly fine to read his works as poetry."
The presumption now is that this might open the floodgates to other well-regarded singer-songwriters such as Leonard Cohen and Bruce Springsteen, but time will have to tell.

After a typically quiet week in which he made no apparent move to accept the award, and with one of the Nobel committee getting a strop about it, Bob came forward to claim he had been "speechless" and was ready & willing to accept it after all.

Whether the shock return to recording of Chuck Berry was coincidence, or the ire of an old rocker wanting his own due, is yet to be sorted.

Arena - No Direction Home: Bob Dylan
Martin Scorsese's mammoth 3+hour effort that only really runs up to 1966 anyway, from Dylan's formative years, his exponential progress in folk music (compared to the legend about Robert Johnson's similar Great Leap Forward) and the aggravation felt by Pete Seeger and others when Dylan suddenly decided to "go electric". It's hard not to sympathise with Bob, really, when his angry audience seem to have all the typical patterns of fanatics scorning someone for mocking their faith. Ah well...

Urban Myths: Knocking on Dave's Door
A short drama purporting to deal with Bob Dylan trying to visit Dave Stewart (of the Eurythmics) in August 1993, but carelessly going to the wrong address. But he does persuade the Dave he does meet to propose to his partner Ange. Eddie Marsan thwarts his typecast image in the lead role.

Arena: Bob Dylan - Trouble No More
Footage from a 1980 gig in Los Angeles, around the time he was pushing his Slow Train Coming album, a flirtation with religious sentiment. The concluding version of Abraham, Martin & John suggested there was more going on than simple cleverness.

Bob Dylan - Music in Review 1975-1980
Another one of these I've somehow missed before. This era covered Blood on the Tracks, his Rolling Thunder Revue tour, the Renaldo & Clara concert film, the divorce of his wife, a shock turn to Christianity, and three other albums, plus a live album. He was going through tumultuous personal changes and his professional ones seemed pretty tumultuous to fans too.

Music Icons: The Band
How an American (Levon Helm) and some Canadians got together as a scratch backing band, and as Robbie Robertson was one of them, they develop their own identity. Bob Dylan helped them out, and they in turn helped him, backing him on tour around 1966, when he had "gone electric". They made a great debut Music From Big Pink, but after a few years were facing familiar problems with drugs and band control. They rejoined Dylan in the mid-70s for a while. Martin Scorsese directed their last concert, which became The Last Waltz. Robertson left, and then the band struggled on. They made the R&R HoF in 1994.

Sputnik: Bill Bradshaw
In connection with the Isle of Wight Festival, which marked 50 years since Bob Dylan played there by getting some of the acts this year to do Dylan covers, here was a chap with a book out on the 1969 show, which was his first since his accident, and would be his last for a few years following. He played just an hour, but the lure of his name ensured other acts would also make the trip to the island to play, and the legendary festival was born. Revived in 2002, it continues annually.

Don't Look Back
Helpfully repeated to mark the death of film-maker DA Pennebaker, this classic Bob Dylan effort from 1967 covers the folk legend as he gets harassed by press people who don't get it, and other interviewers who have their own issues. He seems pally with Joan Baez and Donovan (the latter is mocked before he gets on screen because of music industry comparisons between he and Dylan. The film ends with a big gig at the Royal Albert Hall, about which Bob is reverently impressed.

Without warning, he's released a new 17 minute track today, his first new material in 8 years apparently. Called Murder Most Foul, it covers the death of JFK, and wider issues.

Sputnik: Professor Lisa O'Neill Sanders
She teaches a course on Bob Dylan And Philosophy. She got permission to visit the Dylan archives in Tulsa (only open to researchers). The Woody Guthrie archive is also in Tulsa. There are recordings and memorabilia there. George talks about meeting Sean Penn who voiced the audio of "Chronicles" and said Dylan was an oddball. Prof Sanders founded the "Dylan Review".

It went to #1 and means he's now the oldest act to do so with an album of new material (taking that stat from Paul Simon).

Bob Dylan - The 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration
A gig at Madison Square Garden in 1992, with various other acts performing his songs, from John Mellencamp and Neil Young, through Eric Clapton and George Harrison, to the somewhat left-field Stevie Wonder and Tracy Chapman. Bob came out for a group effort in the finale. Many acts were introduced by other of the acts or some who were not performing (or not shown in this edition).

George is quite the fan. Keith has a new book about Dylan's time/s in London.  Firstly in the folk clubs in 1962. He filmed the Subterranean Homesick Blues clip at the back of one such club. He went many years without visiting then was mobbed when he eventually came back to tour.

Bob recently sold his back catalogue to Universal too.
